💥 Reported Airstrikes Target Monastery Sheltering IDPs

On the afternoon of 20 March, amid intense clashes in Katha and Tigyaing Townships, the Myanmar Air Force (MAF) allegedly launched airstrikes on a monastery where internally displaced persons (IDPs) were reported to have been taking refuge.

Mandalay Free Press News reported that dozens of people were killed with many others severely injured, as a result of the strike.

Myanmar Witness geolocated the destruction of the monastery in Katha Town by analysing user-generated content and using Google Earth. The coordinates that point to that monastery can be accessed upon request.

Initiated and funded by the European Union, this project serves as a tribute to the people of Myanmar during their ongoing crises. The composition, created with and for the people of Myanmar, reflects their musical heritage, resilience, and hopes for the future. Lucas Vidal worked closely with Htet Arkar and other traditional musicians, drawing inspiration from their experiences to craft a piece that highlights shared cultural ties, the urgent humanitarian situation, and the EU’s commitment to supporting Myanmar’s people.

Burmese military airstrikes in Dooplaya, destroying a Buddhist monastery and houses, killing and injuring civilians. 26 February 2025.
The military is in a desperate struggle for survival, using brutal tactics, with daily airstrikes and drone attacks across Burma. There has been a huge humanitarian cost, with more than four million people in the country forced to flee their homes. This is a deliberate tactic of the Burmese military. They create a humanitarian crisis to terrorise the people, and to soak up the capacity of the activists, community workers and resistance helping those in need.

UK and other countries need to do more to sanction Burmese and international companies involved in supplying jet fuel to the military. EU and the world must do more to cut the flow of arms and revenue to the Burmese military.
Airbus must stop business with Chinese company AVIC arming the Burmese military.
