The Indo-Gangetics in Pakistan believe they are ‘whiter’ than their kin across the Radcliffe Line.

While the ones in India believe they’re richer than the Pakistanis.

Mohammad Maghsoudfar wouldn’t let his wife go alone to buy medicine for their child.

So he went with her.

That ordinary decision, a husband accompanying his wife to the pharmacy, became the last night of his life.

Mohammad was 48 years old, a father of two children, 14 and 10.

He worked in Asaluyeh, and when he was home he repaired electrical appliances or helped his wife at her shop. Those close to him describe him as kind, funny, respectful and completely devoted to his family.

He rarely spoke about dreams for himself. Most of what he worked for was for his children and their future.

That night, the pharmacy they were heading to was closed and the streets were packed. Mohammad ended up moving through the streets with the crowd.

At around 10:30 pm, he was shot in his right leg. The bullet severed a major artery.

His wife who was with him that night later wrote:

“Twenty minutes later, from all the blood he had lost, he died in my arms.”

They carried Mohammad’s lifeless body back home.

His family kept him there until the following afternoon, not knowing what they were supposed to do. Eventually, they had no choice but to hand his body over to the morgue so they could obtain a death certificate and burial permit.

Then they lost him all over again.

For seven days, his family searched among so many bodies before they were finally able to find him and bury him.

They were forbidden from holding a memorial. They weren’t even allowed to put a gravestone over him.

Mohammad spent his life working for his children.

That night, he left home because he didn’t want his wife going out alone to get medicine for one of them.

He never made it back home to either of them.
