It candidly and despicably says Muslims disproportionately express antisemitic views, because they hold anti-Israel views. It says 45% of all British people are antisemitic because they believe Israel treats Palestinians like Nazis treated the Jews - such would make NAZA antisemitic too.

It recommends schools more actively involve Prevent - PREVENT! - where students express anti-Zionist or anti-Israel views.

Very important. The National Education Union effectively rejects the key recommendations of the new Independent Antisemitism Review, rejecting the IHRA Definition and suggesting current approaches create a hierarchy of racism. Directly says the report "will not tackle antisemitism."

This review looks like yet another Labour Together Project disgrace - the long tail of McSweeney-Starmerism - that will likely inflame rather than reduce tensions in schools.

Exasperating, infuriating stuff. Imagine telling teachers - teachers! In it for the kids! - that they can't talk about or show opposition Israel's genocide against Palestinian children.

Here's what NEU's Daniel Kebede says:

"However, recommending the IHRA definition for schools risks deepening the problem rather than tackling it, and actively undermining efforts to confront antisemitism. It is the wrong approach. The IHRA’s contested framing risks blurring the line between antisemitism and legitimate criticism of the Israeli government and the genocide in Gaza, leaving teachers with uncertainty when they need clarity. A young person’s opposition to the Gaza genocide and scrutiny of the Israeli government are not, in themselves, antisemitic. Young people must have the space to understand and discuss world events. Schools must enable young people to confront difficult issues openly and develop empathy, not drive teachers into silence or leave pupils afraid to express their views. "The NEU welcomes a strengthened focus on antisemitism in the statutory safeguarding guidance and we would encourage the Department for Education to go a step further by strengthening the guidance on all forms of racism. We are concerned that addressing antisemitism without an equally clear commitment to tackling all forms of racism risks creating a hierarchy of racism. No form of racism should be minimised, and no pupil or member of staff should receive less protection. Similarly, the NEU welcomes training for staff on recognising and challenging antisemitism, but we would like to see this in the context of wider antiracism training. The lack of training and time for staff development is a real barrier and almost two thirds of teachers (65 per cent) report that they have not received any antiracism training of any kind within the past year."

And Japan?

Almost silence.

Japan stayed largely silent until foreign media exposed it. Only then did Japanese outlets begin reporting it in a limited fashion.

Contrast this with the incidents that actually trigger national outrage in Japan:

A Thai tourist ate instant noodles before paying at a Japanese convenience store.
A foreign tourist charged their phone in a public restroom.
Chinese tourists discarded the stems of strawberries they had purchased themselves.
Two Chinese tourists danced and filmed outside a convenience store in the deserted early morning hours.

And Japan turned each of them into a national outrage overnight.

Suddenly the media discovers restraint.

From the Nanjing Massacre and Unit 731,
to nuclear-contaminated wastewater discharged into the ocean,
to sex tourism and rape underage girls in Southeast Asia,
and now the destruction of another nation’s protected land—

the reflex is always the same:

minimize,
delay,
deflect,
move on.

What an “exemplary student” of Asia.

People who defend Japan’s refusal to apologize love to cite “shame culture.”

They claim apologizing to China or Korea is too shameful for a nation built on honor.

Yet Japan kneels to the United States without a shred of shame.

The U.S. dropped two atomic bombs on Japanese cities.
Occupied its soil.
Wrote its postwar constitution.
Subjected it to the Plaza Accord.

Yet Japan calls this “learning from the strong” and a “special alliance.”

So it is not about shame.
It is about hierarchy.

“Shame culture” was a label applied to Japan by Western anthropology. It was later repurposed into a form of cultural immunity:

“It is not that we refuse to apologize. Our culture does not permit it.”

Yet Japan is perfectly capable of accepting humiliation when it comes from above.

It accepted defeat, occupation, dependency and strategic subordination to the United States because the United States occupied the superior position in the hierarchy.

It refuses to apologize to the Asian nations it invaded and brutalized because doing so would require recognizing them as moral equals.

In that hierarchy, kneeling to the West is pragmatism.
Kneeling to fellow Asians is humiliation.

To admit guilt to the people you colonized and massacred would mean placing them on the same moral plane as you.

And that is the real shame.

Japan’s “sense of shame,” in this context, is not moral shame.

It is the shame of losing rank.

My view:

That is the contradiction at the heart of Burnham’s decision: asking Britain to accept more fossil fuel extraction in the name of security, while the country remains exposed to global gas prices and the climate damage that comes with burning it.

Jackdaw is no shield against another international price shock. Even at peak output, it is expected to supply only around 4% of Britain’s daily gas demand, and it will not bring household bills down.

It gives the fossil fuel industry another project; it does not give Britain control over the price of gas.

And when Jim Ratcliffe is closing British factories while investing in offshore drilling, we should ask whose interests this model of “energy security” really serves.

The durable answer is to reduce our exposure to fossil fuels: build renewables, storage and grid capacity here at home.

The sun and wind do not have to pass through a strait, depend on a foreign government, or arrive with a global price tag.

EVERYONE IN BRITAIN must stock nine liters of bottled water and three days’ worth of tinned food, the government said yesterday in the latest attempt to gaslight the public about “imminent” threats—but the well-informed British public appears to be unfooled.

A clip of a caller on an LBC phone-in show went viral, after he talked about the way the British government pushes people to believe Russia, Iran or China are “despicable” yet supports “a country that massacred 70,000-odd people”. (He did not name Israel.)

In response, LBC host Ian Dale obediently pushed the official “them pesky Russians” narrative, but the caller was unfooled, and most voices on social media sided with him.

“Russia is not our enemy, and the West is not the Beacon of all that is good,” said Darren of Plymouth, a popular social media voice on X.

Simon S Pembroke agreed: “The caller is right. LBC presenters live in a bubble.”

UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting yesterday tried to make the water and tinned food campaign (called “Be Ready”) sound less political by emphasizing that it would be useful for a variety of weather-related disasters, and without specific mentions of Russia, Iran or China.

Yet popular media such as the Daily Mail yesterday printed the report with a picture of Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

Britons’ natural skepticism makes them harder to fool—as was obvious in the discussion on X. “The mainstream media is complicit in telling fairytales,” said Wendy Puerto, an artist.

BALANCING ACT
Journalists and politicians in the UK and across Europe are playing a difficult balancing act. They have clearly been told to simultaneously push a pair of contradictory lines: one being that Russia is a pitifully weak, collapsing state, and the other being that almighty Russia is actively starting a host of new wars with the UK and Europe.

But many people in the west are well read, and tough to trick.

“Evidence of a Russian ‘hybrid war’ in Europe is vanishingly thin,” wrote geopolitical analyst Thomas Fazi in a report for Responsible Statecraft this week.

“Many of the most widely publicised cases of alleged Russian sabotage — the 'jamming' of the GPS signal of von der Leyen’s plane, the Baltic cable incidents in late 2024, a crashed DHL cargo plane, a fire at Heathrow Airport in 2025 — ended up collapsing upon basic scrutiny. In each case, Russian involvement was ultimately ruled out,” he wrote.
