Excited to share our latest work on a neuron type–specific microexon in Ank3/Ankyrin-G—revealing its role in regulating neuronal excitability and calcium signaling, beyond its classic function at the axon initial segment!
This project has been remarkable for many reasons:
✅ Started in 2017 — eight years in the making
✅ First mouse model generated in our lab
✅ Made possible by an extraordinary team effort
Huge congratulations to co-first authors Shah Alam, Georgia Dermentzaki, David Cabrera-Garcia, Miao Li, and Ruizhi (Ricky) Wang, and to early project leaders Melissa Campbell and Brittany Phillips.
Deeply grateful to our outstanding collaborators Neil Harrison, Guang Yang, Yueqing Peng, and many others.
Special thanks to Vann Bennett, who pioneered the AnkG field, for his encouragement and enthusiastic support on the study!
Early access link below (unedited version). I’ll share a more detailed tweetorial soon!

BREAKING NEWS
The 2025 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Mary E. Brunkow, Fred Ramsdell and Shimon Sakaguchi “for their discoveries concerning peripheral immune tolerance.”
One of the best memories I had as a PhD student in RNA Biology! Highly recommend, and happy to share my experiences if anyone's interested in applying!😊🤓🧬🧫
I really enjoyed being at the CSHL (with a new affiliation!) three years after my first meeting as a second year PhD student! Lots of great talks, reunions, and building new friendship with fellow RNA biologists in the field🧫🧬
🎉 The 30th #RNAMeeting is officially underway in San Diego! ☀️
We’re really kicking off the week with the @jrRNAscientists, beach balls, good vibes, and exciting activities ahead! 🧬🏖️
Stay tuned for career panels, networking, and more! #RNA25#ScienceWithStyle@RNASociety
Excited to share our new paper on Nature - how Ku accommodates Alu expansion in primates by binding to dsRNA, providing a clue for both the high levels of Ku and its essentiality in human cells. Thank @chaolinzhang@hchung03@LenaSteckelberg More to come
