Today I learned that in English:
words starting with "gl-" often relate to light: gleam, glint, glance, glare, glaze, glimpse, glitter, gloss, glower, glisten, glaze, glitz, glazed.
words starting with "sn-" often relate to nose: sniff, sneeze, snuff, snore, snort, snot.
your gut produces tiny nano-sized particles called exosomes constantly, right now, as you read this. they're stuffed with proteins and microRNAs, little genetic instruction slips, and they travel your entire body telling cells what to do. your gut has been running a whole broadcasting network this entire time and nobody told us.
now, some researchers took these exosomes from old mice and young mice and did full multi-omic profiling, proteomics, miRNA sequencing, the whole arsenal. the old gut's exosomes looked completely different. loaded with signals associated with insulin resistance, gut barrier breakdown, and chronic inflammation.
so they fed those old exosomes to young healthy mice. the young mice's gut barriers started weakening. inflammatory substances began leaking into the bloodstream. insulin sensitivity dropped. a completely young, healthy body, receiving old gut packages, began showing metabolic changes it had absolutely no reason to show yet.
then reversed. young exosomes into old mice. some of the metabolic damage walked back.
now here's where i need to be honest with y’all because most of us forget this part: this is mice. and the exact molecular reason why this happens, which specific microRNAs are flipping which switches, isn't fully mapped yet. the researchers found the what. the why is still being hunted.
but the what is genuinely unhinged. the implication sitting underneath this paper is that aging might not just be your cells randomly breaking down. part of it might be your gut continuously transmitting an aging state to the rest of your body, and other organs updating accordingly. not broken. just following instructions from increasingly unreliable management. which means the question becomes: what if you could edit the mail.
