Taking advantage of the growing popularity of radio to communicate directly to the public, FDR delivered the first of his famous "Fireside Chats" #OTD in 1933. The topic was addressing the banking crisis & planning to help the nation get out of the Great Depression.
"Can we really afford to lose our most trusted source of news and live in a world where the information you get is filtered by Big Tech? It’s in Washington’s hands. To keep trusted local broadcasting in the consumer interest, the FCC must act."

AM radio stations play a critical role in providing emergency alerts, local news, and weather reports for millions of Americans. This underscores the need to strengthen the resiliency of these stations, especially as extreme weather – like we've witnessed with hurricanes Helene and Milton – threatens to take them offline.
It's encouraging to hear AM radio stations are implementing 21st Century technology to improve and strengthen their operating systems.
Today, I visited one of the more than 70 hardened AM radio stations in the United States - located in Maryland and serving the east coast. As Chair of @HouseCommerce's Communications & Technology Subcommittee, it was important to receive an in-depth look today at this radio station that is putting this technology to good use.
Congress has a role to play in strengthening our communications systems. And as a member of @HouseCommerce, I'll continue working with my colleagues to advance commonsense legislation that fortifies our critical infrastructure, including AM radio stations, the electric grid, and our telecommunications networks.
"The only way they've been getting information is through AM/FM radio... we take it for granted but it's critical in disasters like this..." - Former FEMA Administrator Pete Gaynor #DependOnAM#WeAreBroadcasters
Big thank you to @AsmCottie who is the first committee chair post-pandemic to allow TV journalism cameras on the dais in a CALeg hearing so we don’t have to film the backs of heads.
This is the first time we’ve been able to do this since Covid-19.
NAB commends the @HouseCommerce Committee for its strong bipartisan passage, by a roll call vote of 45-2, of the AM Radio for Every Vehicle Act out of committee today. 🚗📻 #DependOnAM Read more ⬇️
