Levels of Awareness in politics

Level 1

They believe what their preferred news say and do not sample other sources. Not aware of counter arguments. Not aware their news is mostly narrative.

Level 2

Sample news from multiple sources but believe only their own sources are accurate. Think the other side is all narrative, but familiar with all sides of issues.

Level 3

Aware that ALL news is fake, at least in the sense of missing context and spin. Also known as Gell-Mann Amnesia. But still believe the experts in various fields are usually correct.

Level 4

Understand that NONE of our experts are reliable. Some might be right, not none can be trusted without verification. The distortion of money makes no expert credible.

Level 5

They see the gears of the machine, Mike Benz style. The Republic no longer looks like whatever the Founders intended. The control of powerful billionaires and intelligence professionals is now obvious.

Level 6

You are dead because you know too much. Also known as Epstein Level.

Peer-review is not a part of the scientific method. Period.

The peer-review system, as it exists in its current form, has only existed since the 1970s (maybe 1960s in some cases). It is a relatively modern academic gatekeeping process, it’s not an ancient pillar of science.

Issac Newton, Galileo, Charles Darwin, and even much of Einstein's work (specifically his four Annus Mirabilis papers in 1905) were published without “peer-review.”

Science advances with new evidence, replication, and falsifiability. “Peer-reviewers” typically do none of the above things when reading over a paper that is submitted to an academic journal. Reviewers are anonymous “experts” who often just stamp approval for any papers they happen to agree with and reject ones that challenge their own biases or research because they want to be right.

Just because something has been “peer-reviewed” does not necessarily mean it is accurate.

And just because something hasn't been subject to the academic circle jerk does not necessarily mean it is invalid.

Your peers agreeing with your ideas does not automatically make your ideas valid.

“Peer-review” approval not the arbiter of truth. It can be. Sure. But it can also be gatekeeping.

Redline Reviews has just released a statement about why they had never tested Tesla's FSD before:

SpaceX says that "by the end of 2028, @Starlink Mobile will have already rapidly upgraded the constellation by launching thousands more satellites, providing continuous full global coverage to become the first—and most likely the only—direct-to-device provider to offer true coverage in high-latitude polar regions," according to a new filing.

SpaceX added that Starlink Mobile will be able to provide its partners with life-saving data services by Q3 2027, with voice following within months.

All of these upgrades will be possible thanks to the company's next-generation Starlink Mobile V2 satellites, which will deliver 5G speeds from space with 100x the data density of the current V1 generation satellites.

One of the more novel pieces of equipment we run is The Monster — conceived, designed, and built right here in Bastrop.
It weighs ~140,000 lb and carries Prufrock sections that weigh between 465–480k lb. Its platform tilts ±10°, which lets the machine launch directly into the ground — no pit, no shaft, no concrete, and no crane.
Because it eliminates the crane, we can launch and retrieve machines inside buildings and parking garages, which is key to maximizing tunnel usefulness in urban areas.
When we complete a tunnel and retrieve Prufrock on The Monster, an SPMT can be driven directly under it.
We then drive Prufrock to the next tunnel site, where The Monster tilts downward and launches it straight into the ground. This enables Prufrock to relaunch in under 24 hours.

10 things most people don't know, that engineers think about constantly:

1. CORRELATION IS NOT CAUSATION
Two things happening together does not mean one causes the other.
Engineers test this. Most decisions aren't made by people who do.

2. SYSTEMS FAIL AT INTERFACES
The individual components usually work fine.
It's where they connect that disasters happen.

3. MORE SAFETY FEATURES CAN MAKE THINGS LESS SAFE
Adding redundant systems increases complexity.
Complexity increases the number of ways things can go wrong.
This is called the safety paradox, and it's why nuclear plant design is not simply "add more backups."

4. THE ABSENCE OF EVIDENCE IS NOT EVIDENCE OF ABSENCE
Something hasn't failed yet.
That doesn't mean it's safe.
It may mean you haven't run it long enough.

5. TOLERANCE STACKING
Each component has a tolerance: ±0.1mm.
Put 20 components together, each at the worst end of their tolerance, and you have a 2mm error.
Many products fail not because any part is bad, but because all the parts are slightly wrong in the same direction.

6. THE MAP IS NOT THE TERRITORY
Every engineering model is wrong.
Some models are useful.
The model that causes disasters is the one someone believed was exact.

7. FEEDBACK LOOPS CHANGE SYSTEMS
Adding a monitoring system changes the behaviour of the system being monitored.
Adding safety incentives changes what engineers report.
Measuring performance changes what people optimise for.

8. ENTROPY IS ALWAYS WINNING
Everything degrades over time.
Maintenance is not optional, it's the only reason anything works.
Every structure, machine, and system is a continuous battle against the second law of thermodynamics.

9. THE HUMAN IN THE LOOP IS BOTH THE STRONGEST AND WEAKEST COMPONENT
Human adaptability is extraordinary, humans solve problems no designer anticipated.
Human error is the root cause of most major failures.
Designing for humans means accounting for both.

10. FIRST-PRINCIPLES THINKING IS RARE
Most decisions are made by analogy: "we did it this way before."
The engineers who change things ask: what does physics actually require here?
The answer is almost always different from what tradition suggests.
