Honored today to be recognized by the Minnesota House of Representatives in a bipartisan resolution reaffirming support for Somali Americans and their contributions to the cultural, civic, social, and economic life of this great state.

Minnesota has shown that diversity is not a weakness but a strength. I am deeply grateful to the House members from both parties who stood together in affirming the dignity, inclusion, and belonging of Somali Americans.

One year ago today, I regained my freedom after spending 177 days in detention in Somaliland—the so-called beacon of peace and democracy. It was an unjust ordeal, one that ended only through the sustained and combined efforts of the governments of Australia and the United Kingdom, FAO Somalia, other UN agencies, and countless Somalis both within and outside the country. I remain profoundly grateful for their solidarity and support.
My arrest, trial before a military court (despite being a civilian), and subsequent imprisonment were not based on any wrongdoing. Rather, they were the result of a politically motivated, clan-based vendetta—a retaliatory act following the Somaliland administration’s humiliation at the Battle of Gooje Cadde on August 25, 2023. In that confrontation, the local civilian forces disarmed and expelled Somaliland troops, whose presence had long fuelled local resentment.
Prior to that historic day, Las Anood city endured over six months of relentless, indiscriminate shelling by Somaliland forces, leading to widespread displacement and the destruction of civilian infrastructure.
I had no role in that conflict, nor did I commit any crime. My only 'offence' was my clan affiliation. I share a sub-clan with the people of Sool, Sanaag, and Cayn, who have long resisted Somaliland’s attempts to forcibly assert control as part of its unilateral secession from Somalia.
The recent prisoner swap between Puntland and Somaliland, allowing some inmates from Hargeisa and Garowe prisons to reunite with their families, is a welcome and hopeful step toward justice and reconciliation. But many others remain unjustly incarcerated across Somalia, held without due process, legal recourse, or even formal charges. Their suffering must not be forgotten. Their stories deserve to be told.

I’ve reviewed the Türkiye–Somalia oil deal line by line, consulted Somali and international petroleum experts, including Eng. Karar Shukri,and here’s the truth:

This is not a Production Sharing Agreement (PSA). It’s a Framework Agreement, a non-binding roadmap for future cooperation, not a commercial contract.

Mentions of “90% cost recovery” and “5% royalty” are misleading and premature. These numbers belong in a detailed PSA, not a framework.

Somalia must negotiate any future PSA with due diligence, ensuring a fair fiscal regime that prioritizes Somali national interests.

I fully support Eng. Karar’s recent clarification, and I met him personally here in Nairobi today, it was factual and grounded. Countries like Ghana, Guyana, Tanzania, and Mozambique have similar fiscal regimes at this stage. No need for panic.

That said, FGS must publish the actual PSA, when drafted,for public scrutiny. Transparency is non-negotiable.

A friend shared a passage from a speech delivered by the recently replaced Chief of Somaliland Intelligence at a handover ceremony, in which he sought forgiveness for any mistakes he may have made during his tenure.
As someone who has personally suffered due to the agency’s actions under his watch, I firmly believe that mere words spoken at a ceremonial event cannot atone for the significant injustices inflicted upon innocent individuals — people whose only “offences” were their clan affiliations or political views.
During my time in detention in Somaliland, I met several fellow inmates who, like me, had been arrested, detained, and wrongfully convicted of crimes they did not commit due to the agency’s blatant disregard for the rule of law.
Many victims, some of whom remain trapped in overcrowded prisons, deserve immediate release, compensation, and formal apologies. Additionally, the new Somaliland administration should initiate a comprehensive public inquiry into the agency's conduct during the former Chief's tenure, aiming to bring perpetrators to justice.
Only then can victims feel vindicated and receive justice.
