I am shocked and saddened by the nationwide incidents that killed at least six students and injured thousands by gunfire and sharp weapons wielded by the terrorists of the Awami League and law enforcement agencies. Students from various educational institutions across the country are protesting for the reform of the 56% quota system in Bangladesh's employment sector, demanding fair and equal opportunities based on meritocracy.

The barbaric Sheikh Hasina regime, illegally seizing state power through sham elections, has once again proven that there is no space for innocent students to express their legitimate demands, let alone for opposition political opinions.

I pray for the peace of the souls of those who were killed, for the quick recovery of the injured, and beg Allah to grant the families of the victims the strength to endure this grief and pain. I call upon everyone, regardless of party affiliation, to unite against the atrocities of this illegal government.

I am deeply saddened and outraged by the ongoing brutality, cold-blooded murders, and thousands of arrests of common people and students in Bangladesh. These heinous acts have been committed by the fascist Hasina regime’s police and Awami League terrorists. According to the international news agency AFP, the count of deaths from hospitals around the country has been at least 32 in only last 72 hours, including thousands of injured. However, this estimate is likely conservative, and there may be many more who are either dead or critically injured.

My heartfelt condolences go out to the families of the victims—the brave martyrs in our fight to restore democracy. I stand in full solidarity with this rightful movement and urge the people of Bangladesh to support our students, children, and the courageous freedom-loving generation.

It is my grave concern that the fascist Hasina regime has shut down the internet connection and disconnected the entire country from the world to commit more killings and incidents of enforced disappearances to stop the ongoing people's movement.

I urge the international community to stand beside this movement, express solidarity, and condemn one of the most horrific instances of murder in the history of Bangladesh. Sheikh Hasina, the autocratic ruler who remains in power without the people’s mandate, must be held accountable for these cold-blooded killings of students and should resign immediately.

Despite the brutal crackdown throughout the night on students protesting for fair reforms of the quota system, with internet and telecommunications shut down across the country, these tender-hearted students have continued their protests in various locations today. Meanwhile, some overly enthusiastic members of the police, in implementing the orders of the autocratic Hasina, have arrested many BNP leaders, activists, and student protesters, including the BNP's Senior Joint Secretary General, Advocate Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, in an attempt to give political colour to this movement.

I call upon all leaders, activists, and common people of the pro-democracy political parties, including the BNP, in Bangladesh to stand by these tender-hearted students, provide them with all support, and carry this movement forward. Use all your strength to make this student-led movement successful. The fall of Hasina, weighed down by her sins, and her corrupt and anti-human rights associates, is inevitable.

খাদ্যের মতো মৌলিক চাহিদা পূরণ বেশ কঠিন হয়ে উঠেছে অনেকের জন্য। একবেলা খাবারের শেষে পরের বেলার চালের জোগান নেই– দেশে এ রকম পরিবারের হার ২ শতাংশ। আটা মজুত থাকে না ৬০ শতাংশ পরিবারে। নিত্যপণ্যের মধ্যে ডালের সংস্থান নেই ১৯ শতাংশ পরিবারে। বাংলাদেশ পরিসংখ্যান ব্যুরোর (বিবিএস) খাদ্য নিরাপত্তা-সংক্রান্ত জরিপের চূড়ান্ত প্রতিবেদনে এ তথ্য উঠে এসেছে।

খানা আয় ও ব্যয় জরিপের চূড়ান্ত প্রতিবেদন অনুযায়ী, দেশে পরিবারের সংখ্যা এখন ৪ কোটি ১০ লাখ। সংস্থার জনশুমারি ও গৃহগণনার চূড়ান্ত প্রতিবেদন অনুযায়ী, দেশের মোট জনসংখ্যা ১৬ কোটি ৯৮ লাখ ২৮ হাজার ৯১১ জন। সে হিসাবে দেশের ৩৩ লাখ ৯৬ হাজার ৫৮০ জন মানুষের একবেলা খাওয়ার পর পরের বেলার চালের জোগান নেই।

খাদ্য নিরাপত্তা পরিসংখ্যান-২০২৩ নামে এ প্রতিবেদন গত শুক্রবার বিবিএসের ওয়েবসাইটে প্রকাশ করা হয়। প্রতিবেদনে খাদ্য পরিস্থিতি সম্পর্কে বলা হয়, খাদ্য এবং সুষম খাদ্য গ্রহণ দেশের জন্য প্রধান চ্যালেঞ্জ। একই সঙ্গে বড় উদ্বেগের বিষয়।

জার্মানি-ভিত্তিক বার্টেলসম্যান স্টিফটুং রূপান্তর সূচকে (বিটিআই) বাংলাদেশ স্বৈরতন্ত্রের তালিকাতে ঢুকে পড়েছে। রাজনৈতিক রূপান্তর, অর্থনৈতিক রূপান্তর এবং শাসনব্যবস্থার সূচক তিনটি ক্ষেত্রেই বাংলাদেশের অবস্থান নাজুক।

বিটিআই এই তিনটি রূপান্তরের ওপর ভর করে মোট ১৩৭ টি দেশের সূচক প্রকাশ করে। সাম্প্রতিক প্রতিবেদনে দেখা যায়, রাজনৈতিক রূপান্তরে বাংলাদেশের অবস্থান ৮৭ (৪.০৩/১০), যাকে মাঝারি স্বৈরতন্ত্র বলে অভিহিত করা হয়েছে। অর্থনৈতিক রূপান্তরে বাংলাদেশের অবস্থান ৮৪ (৪.৮৬/১০), যাকে খুব সীমিত বলে অভিহিত করা হয়েছে। শাসনব্যবস্থার সূচকে বাংলাদেশ অবস্থান ১০৬ (৩.৬৬/১০), যা দুর্বল হিসেবে চিহ্নিত হয়েছে।

সর্বোপরি ১৩৭টি দেশের মধ্যে বাংলাদেশের অবস্থান ৯৩ এবং ১০ এর স্কেলে বাংলাদেশের মান ৪.৪৫।

বিটিআই এর সূচক অনুযায়ী মান ৬ এর নিচে হয় তাহলে সেটাকে স্বৈরতন্ত্র হিসেবে হিসেবে বিবেচিত হবে। সুষ্ঠু নির্বাচনের অনুপস্থিতি এবং গুরুতর অনিয়ম নির্দেশক হিসেবে ধরা হয়ে থাকে।

বাংলাদেশের ক্ষেত্রে এই প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয়েছে, বাংলাদেশে গণতান্ত্রিক পশ্চাৎপদতা দেখা দিয়েছে এবং স্বৈরতান্ত্রিক ঝোঁক বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছে। পাশাপাশি অর্থনৈতিক চ্যালেঞ্জগুলোও সামনে এসেছে। পাশাপাশি, ২০২২ সালের মাঝামাঝিতে বিরোধী রাজনৈতিক দলও রাস্তায় বিক্ষোভ সমাবেশ আয়োজন করা শুরু করেছে।

এতে বলা হয়েছে, ২০১৮ সালের নির্বাচনের পর ক্ষমতাসীন আওয়ামীলীগ গুম, বিচার বহির্ভূত হত্যাকাণ্ড, নির্যাতন ইত্যাদির মতো গুরুতর মানবাধিকার লঙ্ঘন করার মাধ্যমে ক্ষমতা আঁকড়ে ধরে রেখেছে। বিভিন্ন দমনমূলক আইন ব্যবহার করে আওয়ামীলীগ সরকার সমালোচক, সাংবাদিকসহ ভিন্নমতাবলম্বীদের দমন করেছে।

প্রতিবেদনে ডিজিটাল নিরাপত্তা আইনকে ‘ড্রাকোনিয়ান’ চিহ্নিত করে বলা হয়েছে, এই আইনের অধীনে কোনো ওয়ারেন্ট ছাড়াই আইনশৃঙ্খলা বাহিনী কাউকে তল্লাশি ও গ্রেফতার করতে পারে। ২০১৮ এর অক্টোবর থেকে ২০২২ সালের আগস্ট পর্যন্ত মোট ২,৮৮৯ জনের বিরুদ্ধে এই আইনে মামলা হয়েছে এবং এর মধ্যে ২৬ জনের বয়স ছিল ১৮ এর নিচে।

প্রতিবেদনে র‍্যাবের বিরুদ্ধে মার্কিন নিষেধাজ্ঞার বিষয়েও উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে।

বিটিআই বলেছে, আওয়ামীলীগ সরকারে অর্থনৈতিক উন্নয়নের কথা বলে স্বৈরতান্ত্রিক ঝোঁককে বৈধতা দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করলেও এই সময়ের মধ্যে মুদ্রাস্ফীতি ও রিজার্ভ সঙ্কটের কারণে বাংলাদেশের অর্থনীতি গুরুতর হুমকির সম্মুখীন পড়ে। আইএমএফ এর কাছে থেকে ৪.৫ বিলিয়ন ডলার এবং বিশ্বব্যাংকের কাছ থেকে ১ বিলিয়ন ডলার ঋণ চেয়েছে।

প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয়, ২০২২ সালের জুলাই-ডিসেম্বরের মধ্যে প্রধান বিরোধী দল বিএনপি ১০টি বিভাগীয় শহরে সমাবেশ আয়োজন করলে সরকার নানাভাবে বাঁধা দেওয়ার চেষ্টা করে এবং বিরোধী দলের নেতাকর্মীদের ওপর দমন-পীড়ন চালায়। তবু এই সমাবেশে উল্লেখযোগ্য অংশগ্রহণ দেখা গিয়েছে। ২০২২ সালের শেষ চার মাসে ১০জন বিএনপি নেতাকর্মী পুলিশের হাতে গুলিবিদ্ধ হয়ে মারা যান।

বিটিআই ইনডেক্স ২০২৪ এর প্রতিবেদনে বৈশ্বিক শাসনব্যবস্থার এক করুণ চিত্র ফুটে উঠেছে। বিশ্বব্যাপী দুর্বল শাসনব্যবস্থার রাষ্ট্রগুলোর সংখ্যা আশঙ্কাজনক হারে বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছে। শাসনব্যবস্থার অবনতি, সাংবিধানিক গণতন্ত্রের মূল্যবোধ ধরে রাখার অক্ষমতা এবং অন্তর্ভুক্তিমূলক বাজার অর্থনীতির ব্যর্থতাকে গুরুতর প্রবণতা হিসেবে চিহ্নিত করা হয়েছে। ১৩৭টি দেশের মধ্যে ৭৪টি কোনো না কোনোভাবে স্বৈরতান্ত্রিক শাসনব্যবস্থার অধীনে রয়েছে।

সরকারগুলোর মধ্যে অগ্রাধিকার বাস্তবায়ন ও কার্যকরকভাবে সংস্থান পরিচালনার সক্ষমতা হ্রাসের পাশাপাশি, গণতন্ত্রবিরোধী উপাদানগুলো রহিত করার সক্ষমতাও হ্রাস পেয়েছে। রেজিমের পরিবর্তন, ক্যু ও স্বৈরতন্ত্রের আধিপত্য রাজনৈতিক রূপান্তরে বিঘ্ন ঘটিয়েছে। ভারসাম্যের অবক্ষয়, রাজনৈতিক অংশগ্রহণে নিষেধাজ্ঞা ও সরকারি ক্ষমতার অপব্যবহার গণতন্ত্রকে আরও ক্ষুণ্ণ করেছে। অর্থনৈতিক রূপান্তরের ক্ষেত্রে প্রতিবেদনে মন্তর পুনরুদ্ধার, মুদ্রাস্ফীতি ও ক্রমবর্ধমান বৈষম্যের দিকে নজর দিয়েছে।

বিটিআই প্রতিবেদনে বলা হয়েছে, স্বৈরতান্ত্রিক রেজিমগুলোতে ব্যাপক দুর্নীতি ও প্রশাসনিক অদক্ষতা থাকা সত্ত্বেও তারা নিজেদেরকে কার্যকর ব্যবস্থা হিসেবে হিসেবে তুলে ধরার চেষ্টা করেছে। অনেকগুলো দেশে সংঘাতের তীব্রতা বৃদ্ধি পেয়েছে, ঐক্যমত্য গড়ে তোলার সক্ষমতা হ্রাস পেয়েছে।

২০২১ সালের ১ ফেব্রুয়ারি থেকে ২০২৩ সালের ৩১ জানুয়ারি পর্যন্ত তথ্যের ভিত্তিতে এই সূচক তৈরি করা হয়েছে।

Yet another death caused by Chattra League. Abantika Fairuz, a Jagannath University student, tragically committed suicide recently. She endured targeted harassment and solitary confinement at the hands of a Chhatra League leader named Amman Siddique, backed by Din Islam, a former Chhatra League figure who forcibly obtained the position of a teacher and a proctor of the university. Despite seeking help from the administration, this unchecked power ultimately led to Abantika's suicide. The Chhatra League's authority stems not from mere power or force, but from its close ties with the university administration and the Awami League government.
Back in 2018 election, Abantika's father, a man of integrity, suffered greatly after trying to prevent electoral fraud, resulting in his brutal assault and subsequent decline in health, leading to his death. These planned and systemic murders are the responsibilities of the Awami backed government and Chhatra League.

In Bangladesh, as many as 92% workers were found employed without any written contracts, according to the study conducted by the Asian Floor Wage Alliance (AFWA).
The report particularly sheds light on the vulnerability of women who are often excluded from essential labour protections. This lack of formal contracts denies them benefits and exposes them to a greater risk of rights violations, gender-based violence and harassment.
Despite raising this issue in various media and news outlets, the Awami -backed government remains silent for their own good. Because collaborating or making illegal financial deal with the garment owners benefits them more than ensuring the safety of the readymade garment sector workers.

The inflation of the country is not even close to the target set in the budget for the fiscal year 2023-24. Overall inflation stood at 9.67 percent in February in the second phase of the financial year. Although most of the South Asian countries have come out of the economic recession, there is no possibility of reducing the inflation in Bangladesh.

Economists say that Bangladesh's failure to reduce inflation is due to other factors other than economic factors. Notable among which is the large-scale money laundering by various Awami League leaders and activists in the country and the failure to suppress market syndicates even during Ramadan.
