Thanks to our donors, endangered sea turtles now have triple the protection along Colombia’s Caribbean coast! 🌊

Your support helped expand the Wildlife and Flora Sanctuary of Acandí, Playón, Playona, San Francisco, and Cabo Tiburón along the border of Panama and Colombia.

This expansion faced years of delay, but local communities remained committed to conserving the remarkable region and its biodiversity. 💚

Initially covering 65,000 acres, the sanctuary now protects 220,568 acres of connected marine and terrestrial ecosystems, including:

🐢 Rocky shores where Vulnerable Leatherback Turtles and Critically Endangered Hawksbill Turtles build their nests

🪸 Reefs that sustain diverse species, including Critically Endangered Elkhorn Coral

🦈 A migratory corridor for marine megafauna like Critically Endangered Scalloped Hammerhead sharks

🌿 Seagrass beds and mangrove forests that store blue carbon

We supported our local partner, @WWFColombia, in their collaborations to expand the protected area with @ParquesColombia and the community councils of Cocomanorte, Cocomaseco, and Cocomasur.

Strong community representation throughout the process and ongoing co-management will ensure that the protections align with local priorities and needs.

We’re honored to share the replay of our conversation with our partners in Papua New Guinea, home to Oceania’s largest stretch of intact rainforest! 🌏🌿

Dr. Lisa Dabek, Founder and Senior Director of the Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program at @woodlandparkzoo, and Modi Pontio, Associate Director of the Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program, share their stories of success and opportunity in community-led conservation.

The Tree Kangaroo Conservation Program is at the forefront of conservation in Papua New Guinea.

Together, we helped create the country’s first nationally recognized conservation area of its kind.

Named for the Yopno, Uruwa, and Som rivers that flow through it, the YUS Conservation Area protected 233,186 acres, and subsequent protections have expanded to nearly 400,000 acres.

Our continued partnership will build on this important milestone, extending protection across an additional 74,000 acres.

It’s #WorldGorillaDay, and we have remarkable new footage from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) that reveals the power of protection and the real-world impact of donors like you. 🦍🌿

Shared by our partners at the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund (@SavingGorillas), the video clip features a family of Grauer’s Gorillas foraging through grasslands in the Community Forest that we helped establish together.

Look closely, and you can see a baby gorilla riding on an adult’s back!

Keeping rainforests intact is essential to the long-term survival of species in DRC and around the tropics. Large mammals like these gorillas need safe, expansive habitats free from the threats of deforestation and hunting.

Many of our partnerships support local teams who patrol, monitor, and manage Community Forests. In the Nkuba Conservation Area, the Fossey Fund reported on the incredible value our partners bring to conservation in the Congo.

In recent months, their teams have:

🚫 Removed more than 1,500 illegal hunting traps

🔬Trained 40 biodiversity researchers in SMART data collection

🌳 Conducted more than 100 biodiversity surveillance patrols, each lasting two weeks
