Tom Morello wanted his guitar to sound like anything except a guitar on “Bulls on Parade.” During the solo, he switches off the pickups and uses the toggle switch while scraping the strings with his hand, creating the rhythmic scratching effect of a hip-hop DJ working a turntable. It perfectly suited a song attacking military spending and the power of the arms industry, bringing rap technique into Rage Against the Machine’s heavy sound without using a sample. At Woodstock ’99, Morello recreates the effect live as the song erupts in front of an enormous crowd.
