$2.5b moved through tornado cash in 2025. How much was legitimate? That’s the compliance question many are trying to answer now.
Mixers like Tornado cash attract criminals. Before sanctions were imposed in 2022, Tornado Cash had a mix of legitimate and illicit users.
Privacy advocates & DAOs protecting treasury movements from front-runners.
Then the sanctions hit, and legitimate users couldn't afford to be seen mixing their funds with Tornado Cash.
Unfortunately, during the sanction period, criminal activity became a disproportionately larger share of total volume, even though absolute numbers dropped.
Now the sanctions are lifted, legitimate users are returning.
But here's the compliance issue for financial institutions:
If $100k arrives in your system from a Tornado Cash withdrawal, what's the probability it's clean?
Is it 30%? 50%? 80%? Nobody knows with precision.
And that uncertainty is the entire problem.
Because for a family office deploying capital on-chain, for a bank building crypto payment rails, for an asset manager screening a defi position, "we don't know" is a liability.
Most compliance tools today flag Tornado Cash transactions as medium risk and some even flag them green.
That's a policy choice based on a legal precedent, not a data-driven assessment of actual criminal exposure.
The privacy debate is important. I support it.
But if you manage institutional capital, your compliance stack should tell you exactly what kind of funds you’re getting into.
Mastercard killed Uncash, a no-KYC crypto card. But if you've been paying attention, this was inevitable:
Here's what "no-KYC crypto card" means:
• These cards aren't issued to you. They're corporate business cards issued to a shell company that passed KYB verification
• You're listed as a "fake employee" on paper. You have no relationship with the issuing bank, no deposit protection, and no legal standing
• The moment you deposit crypto into that system, your funds legally belong to the company, not you
• Mastercard or Visa can trace any card through its 6-digit BIN, identify the issuing bank, and shut the program down in one compliance review
And Uncash is just the start of this witch hunt for companies operating in gray areas.
Crypto is merging with traditional finance.
But traditional finance didn't build decades of compliance infrastructure for fun. AML, KYC, sanctions screening etc. These frameworks exist because trillions of dollars move through these systems daily.
The stakes are enormous.
You can't bolt crypto onto Visa's rails and expect them to ignore the rules that govern every other participant in their network. That's not how infrastructure works.
As we help more companies with compliance, it's fair to say that the companies that survive this convergence are the ones building compliance into their DNA from day one.
Not the ones trying to find loopholes before the inevitable shutdown.
Capital is selective again.
