PIttsburgher living in beautiful East Tennessee. Dual citizen of Italy. Fan of my family, Pittsburgh sports, politics, history, and theology. Views are my own.
I grew up Republican. Still am in many ways. But MAGA pushed the party so far right that I get called a liberal now.
Let me explain the difference:
Traditional Republicans believe in:
• Fiscal responsibility (balanced budgets, not exploding deficits for tax cuts)
• Limited government (actual small government, not big government that punishes your enemies)
• Strong institutions (courts, elections, constitutional norms matter)
• Personal responsibility (your actions have consequences)
• Free markets (not tariffs and trade wars)
• Strong alliances (NATO, international partnerships)
• Rule of law (no one is above it, including the president)
MAGA Republicans believe in:
• Whatever Trump says today (even if it contradicts yesterday)
• Loyalty tests (agree 100% or you're a traitor/RINO)
• Conspiracy theories over facts (stolen election, deep state, QAnon adjacent stuff)
• Grievance politics (owning the libs > actual policy)
• Personality cult (Trump loyalty above party, above country, above truth)
• Performative outrage (culture war theater instead of governance)
• Ends justify means (storm the Capitol, ignore election results, whatever it takes)
I didn't move left. The party moved off a cliff.
I still believe in conservative principles. But when you say "maybe we should respect election results" or "fiscal responsibility matters" or "rule of law applies to everyone," you get called a liberal.
That's not conservatism. That's a cult.
@timburchett Ok Congressman, you "master classed" the journalist by basically talking over her. If you're that confident in the numbers, why not have an actual civil discussion? I'm all for reducing fraud and waste but come on man, be an honest participant rather than just attacking the news.
@TennesseeCAN Your concept of "strong support" doesn't include this TN taxpayer and parent. Come back to us when you hold these private enterprises as accountable as you do public schools. I'm not interested in funding someone's get rich quick scheme.
@RepNancyMace 47 supported insurrectionists. His supporters, ESPECIALLY those in Congress, will be forever tainted by history for putting the interests of the Republic behind political expediency.
@AnnieAgar Please for the love of everything holy let Tomlin find a fresh start with another team. He is a tremendous leader and motivator of men but is incredibly stubborn and unwilling to change to adapt to today's NFL. His playoff futility is an embarrassment to the franchise.
@timburchett@realDonaldTrump Wow, how uneventful it will be today compared to the insurrection of four years ago. Any member of Congress who helped reelect DJT doesn't deserve the office for which he tried to destroy. Real conservatives put the Republic ahead of those who try to destroy it.
@GovBillLee So, Governor, are the accountability measures for private investors exactly the same as they are for public schools; if not, why not?
I love TN's low taxes but I would gladly pay more to strengthen pub schools. I don't want my tax $ wasted on get rich quick schemes.
@timburchett Maybe, just maybe, that was among AP's first reports on the event when things were still unknown? The degree to which some of you instinctively jump to a conspiracy explanation is equal parts hilarious and tragic.
@timburchett The fact many principled conservatives are coming out against Trump SHOULD make you and other MAGA Republicans care. Perhaps you will care more after Tuesday.
@GlennJacobsTN@realDonaldTrump And Trump's response to Biden's statement reminded me exactly why I will never vote for Trump again... what an egostistical, moral failure of a human being he is. I miss real Republican statesmen. Trump is the the true RINO.
@AGTennessee@GlennJacobsTN@AGIowa News flash boys - that is current federal law. Only American citizens are allowed to vote in federal elections. BTW your efforts to intimidate legal TN and U.S. citizens through mailings (at taxpayer expense) isn't appreciated by this conservative who doesn't like govt overreach.
@GlennJacobsTN@elonmusk Mayor: "Legacy media" isn't supposed to be "the voice of the people." It's supposed to present facts in an objective manner. It's not perfect, and one can argue lenses or biases, but to lump that in together with a free-for-all platform based on bots and algorithms is laughable.
