🇵🇰 “A Coup Dissguised as Emergency": Pakistan suspends Imran Khan's party's provincial government

President Asif Ali Zardari declared a state of emergency on Sunday in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, a northwestern province bordering Afghanistan and the only one governed by Khan's party, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

The order removed its chief minister and cabinet, and a federally appointed governor will run the province for an initial six months. Islamabad accuses the provincial government of failing to confront militant attacks.

The move came a week into a PTI march on Islamabad demanding Khan's release. The army was authorized to deploy across the province, and phone and internet service was cut in the provincial capital, Peshawar, and in Swabi, according to local media.

PTI says ousted Chief Minister Sohail Afridi has been detained. A party spokesperson called the move "a coup disguised as emergency."

🇵🇰 Pakistan pulled police protection from lawmakers in its most Taliban-threatened province as a political war with Islamabad boils over

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa borders Afghanistan, and the Pakistani Taliban strike there almost daily, yet police have pulled security from provincial lawmakers as the local government, run by Imran Khan's PTI party, squares off with the federal government.

Islamabad says the province walked away from a counterterrorism deal last week, and federal officials are reportedly weighing "Governor's Rule," which would suspend the elected government and hand Islamabad direct control.

Pakistan just promised troops to defend Saudi Arabia while fighting itself at home, and a province with no clear command and exposed politicians is exactly the opening the Taliban have been waiting for.

🇵🇰 What's happening to PTI supporters in Pakistan?

The latest allegations from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are DEEPLY troubling.

Barrister Shahzad Akbar claims Pakistan's ISI is paying members of the so-called “Good Taliban” to abduct PTI workers and elected representatives.

He says an armed group has been assembled specifically to spread fear and prevent PTI's long march.

These allegations haven't been independently established, and they DEMAND a proper investigation.

But I keep thinking about the families of those being targeted.

Imagine being politically active in your own country and having to worry that armed men could come for you simply because of whom you support.

Whatever your politics, nobody should have to live with that fear.
