@kamilkazani Lake Erie, the southernmost of the Great Lakes, freezes solid every year, blocking Chicago from lake freighter access during winter.
Thanks to pollution, Des Plaines River does not freeze, keeping Chicago accessible to Mississippi barges. However, barges displace 20x less water
Number of Iranian applicants referred for comprehensive security screening and the resulting outcomes.
The chart below does not include the fewer than five permanent residence applicants per year who were referred for human rights violations screening in 2019, 2020 and 2021, or the fewer than five permanent residence applicants per year who were referred for organized crime screening in 2019 and 2021.
It also excludes the fewer than five temporary residence applicants per year who were referred for VIT35 screening in 2020, 2021, 2022, 2024, and 2025, as well as the fewer than five temporary residence applicants per year who were referred for VIT37 screening in 2019, 2021 and 2022.

@norpadon The French are stereotypically associated with abstraction.
What surprises me is how Latin American universities consistently produce mathematicians strong in both structural abstraction and calculation, at the graduate level
@saintgumi I recently went on a vacation where I saw no Chinese people at all for 9 days
Previously I thought there was no escaping from Chinese tourists/immigrants/expats. They can be deep in the jungles of Congo and Nicaragua, deserts of Mauritania, and remote islands like St Helena
Watching the Canadian equivalent of Prime Minister's questions is a bit weird when you're used to the UK original. Do they always do this North Korea-ish clapping and standing up?
@mathelirium We know almost nothing concrete about Gradshtein and Ryzhik, except that Ryzhik died during WW2. So fairy tales abound - some say the book was compiled in a Gulag in Eastern Siberia, some say Ryzhik died in battle
@cookiecarver A common complaint in China about translated works (especially from European languages) is that they’re too specific.
If a Russian novel says “a kitten sits under a birch tree sipping vodka”, then it would feel unnatural unless it’s translated as “cat drinks alcohol under tree”.
@CamdenHutchison J’ose imaginer que les 20% restants veulent un avancement dans la bureaucratie fédérale
Au bout du compte on est en Colombie-BRITannique
@zoecabina The Soviet sanatorium culture imprinted vacationing into the Russian blood. 2/3 of the passengers on this Chinese train were Russians from middle of nowhere between Chita and Irkutsk. They were the poorest Russians I’ve seen, heading to the most mid beach in China
There is a funny story about how Banach ended up getting his PhD. He was famously allergic to bureaucracy & exams. He did not care about his doctorate.
To get him his PhD, his colleagues tricked him. They told him some gentlemen from Warsaw had arrived & had some interesting mathematical questions they could not solve.
Banach spent hrs in a room answering their questions with brilliance. He did not realize until it was over that he had just completed his viva voce (oral defense). The gentlemen were the examining committee. He was awarded his doctorate for a conversation he thought was just a casual chat.
@DonnelVillager This guy would learn Mongolian, Tibetan, Persian and Portuguese with his eunuchs while his harem played with panthers.
Meanwhile, the annals of my county mentioned cannibalism four times over a period of 1200 years. 3 out of 4 times happened under Zhengde
"Milk Yield Tracker" enters the Russian market! 🐄📲
Russia challenges Western sanctions with an innovative approach! Rosselkhozbank has created a new app called "Uchet Nadoya"—but in reality, it’s designed to bypass App Store restrictions.
When sanctions are imposed, the Russians always find a way around them! 😆
Today, we made history. Hundreds traveled long distances and braved the cold to gather on Parliament Hill for justice and fairness. Thank you to the Senators @SenatorVictorOh@yuenpauwoo stood by our side, hearing our voices. We live, study, work, and pay taxes in Canada…
There are some 800 Itelmen speakers and 1,600 Koryak speakers left. Up to half of the fighting-age men of these communities may have perished in Ukraine as the last remaining Paleo-Siberians are recruited into the Ukraine war.
