The $TAO / @opentensor token is very interesting.

Question: why would any company build their own data center when they can build any AI model for 1/100 the price using the $TAO subnets?

With fixed supply of 21m tokens plus increasing demand for AI, this token seems like a no-brainer. Not to mention the staking possibilities using the subnets. Also, arb possibilities trading the subnets.

The total supply is capped at 21 million TAO. Currently, 1 TAO is emitted per block, with a new block every 12 seconds. Instead of using a block-based halving schedule like Bitcoin, TAO's issuance schedule follows a supply-based model.

The chain operates on a Proof of Authority (PoA) mechanism, with plans to transition to Proof of Stake (PoS) by the end of next year. A few institutions run the main nodes, with OTF operating the majority. Bittensor's core innovation is not at the chain level—Substrate is used for the blockchain, and there is built-in governance, allowing for changes in the code. However, physical decentralization is not the primary focus at this stage, but it may be later on, our main goal is economic decentralization.

The chain nodes themselves do not directly receive the emission. Instead, a contract on the chain divides Bittensor into 47 "subnets." Each subnet has 64 validators who submit performance reports of the miners (192 nodes per subnet) to the chain. The network then uses a consensus mechanism called Yuma Consensus to reach agreement on the miners' performance and quality. The consensus doesn't analyze what miners are producing—the validators use custom Python code to evaluate the miners and submit weight updates.
