Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, as Nigeria’s President, made nine separate visits to the United States while in office.

Five of those were working visits. Two were to have private meetings with President George W. Bush. One was to attend the G-8 Economic Summit in Georgia, while the last was to attend the funeral of former President Ronald Reagan.

Alhaji Umaru Musa Yar’Adua, even with his short stay in office, also made two separate working visits to the United States, including a White House meeting with President George W. Bush.

President Goodluck Jonathan made four major diplomatic visits to the U.S. while in office.

One was a working visit, one was to attend the Nuclear Security Summit as Acting President, one was to meet with President Barack Obama, while the last was to attend the landmark U.S.–Africa Leaders Summit.

President Muhammadu Buhari also traveled to the United States for four primary bilateral and multilateral summits.

But President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appears to be the only Nigerian President since 1999 who has not visited the United States for a presidential meeting, working visit, diplomatic engagement, nuclear summit, or any other major bilateral engagement.

Even at the last United Nations General Assembly high-level sessions in New York, President Tinubu sent Vice President Kashim Shettima instead.

President Tinubu is certainly not known as a President who dislikes travelling. In fact, travelling has been one of the most visible aspects of his administration.

So, why has the United States been different?

Is there a deliberate reason President Tinubu has avoided Washington despite the importance of Nigeria–U.S. relations?

Is there something stopping him from following the footsteps of his predecessors by visiting the United States and meeting President Donald Trump?

Or is this simply a matter of diplomatic strategy?

BREAKING NEWS: President @realDonaldTrump-appointed U.S. Attorney, the amazing and no-nonsense Jeanine Pirro (@USAttyPirro), has initiated action in federal court to comply with the @uscourts orders concerning the release of @TheJusticeDept, @FBI, and @DEAHQ records relating to drug-trafficking allegations against Nigerian President Bola Tinubu (@officialABAT).

U.S. Attorney Pirro requested an additional 10 days, but Judge Beryl Howell granted only four additional days, until August 21, noting that this case has already been pending for more than three years.

We deeply appreciate U.S. Attorney #Pirro and the DOJ’s renewed motivation to release these documents, and we agree with Judge Howell. This case has been pending for three years. The time to release the #Tinubu drug-trafficking files is now.
As President #Trump has indicated, our shared interests with #Nigeria do not mean supporting an alleged drug trafficker.
