“What you may not know about the Kiteezi landfill since 1996/1997.”
Much has been said about the recent tragedy involving “Kiteezi landfill” but it’s not only about the 30+ lives that have so far been lost,. What about the thousands that have been internally displaced.
It’s indeed so regrettable that with various prior warnings about the sorry state of kiteezi landfill and how risky+life threatening it had become to the public, those with responsibility+authority did not take the advice from experts crucial.
The real tragedy about “kiteezi landfill” is far beyond what we see….
“Has anyone thought about the open flow of leachate that has possibly been on since established???.!!!!!
What is leachate???.
In this context, leachate is the contaminated liquid formed when water percolates through the waste disposal site hence accumulating very many contaminants. leachate mostly contains organic compounds, heavy metals, and many other lethal contaminants that are life threatening. leachate is a major environmental hazard that contaminates soil and water.
It’s worse when it contains the “perfluoroalky and polyfluoroalkyl” substances “PFAS” a group of chemicals linked to cancer, human organ damage and delayed development in children.
When leachate contaminates water sources, human life is in danger. When this contaminated water is used for any agricultural purpose, the toxins will enter food chain and hence a greater risk to human life.
About 14 days ago, I was informed by colleagues @zandy_isaac and other team members from @GayoUganda who had previously visited Kiteezi landfill and made strong alarms all which were ignored.
Watching people fetch contaminated ground+surface water just meters away from the landfill was just horrific.
My humble recommendations,
1. We need a new landfill made in real state of art with all attributes of a landfill not a mere dump site for garbage.
2. Streamline waste collection putting more emphasis on segregation from the source to ease recycling and upcycling.
3. Those in authority should support initiatives, companies or entrepreneurs that are in the waste management industry for better waste management and treatment.
4. Those in authority must ensure that all possibilities to respect and protect lives (plant and animal) are always explored and given the necessary attention deserved.
5. Citizens must be further educated about the risks associated with encroachment of various environmental reserves and fair methodologies be employed by government for possible relocations.
Thank you.
