If I’m being kind it might be because the general population of Britain can’t quite believe there is now overwhelming evidence that so called “security forces” in another country are exterminating their citizens by the thousands mostly shooting them in the head at point blank range for peaceful protest when in Britain you can’t get the police to come out if you’ve had your car stolen.

Don’t lecture us on what we need. If you were being beaten by an abusive partner, would you want your family, neighbours and friends just to stand by? We are facing brutality that you cannot even imagine from the comfort of your warm office with high speed internet!

The images of body bags leave no doubt about the brutality of Iran’s repression, and a communications blackout is indefensible.

Across the country, Iranians are protesting real economic hardship, much of it deepened by US sanctions. From the UK, genuine solidarity means opposing those sanctions and the imperial strategies and aspirations behind them.

At the same time, this unrest is being cynically exploited by Netanyahu’s genocidal government as a pretext for military intervention and regime change — a path that must be firmly rejected.

It must be clear: only the Iranian people have the right to decide their own future. No outside power should dictate or interfere.

Any serious politics requires holding all of these truths together.

@owenjonesjourno As an Iranian I agree wholeheartedly with 1) and I would of course agree to 3) with your second point I’m just not sure how we can deracinate such entrenched brutality without help.
