Prime Minister @andyburnham and Foreign Secretary @Ed_Miliband : how much longer will Britain remain silent?
For three years the father of my two sons, and Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, has been brutally penalised by his political opponents, in a personal vendetta by Army Chief, Asim Munir, which according to the UN, amounts to torture and which is now taking a potentially fatal toll on his physical and mental health.
He has endured 3 years of solitary confinement. For nearly ten months now his family has been denied contact with him. He has been deprived of the most basic human contact, denied access to books, lawyers and doctors.
The international human-rights standards are unequivocal. Under the UN’s Nelson Mandela Rules, solitary confinement lasting more than 15 consecutive days is prohibited and amounts to torture.
He has endured this treatment not for 15 days, but for three years.
Pakistan’s own Supreme Court has now intervened: ordering comprehensive medical treatment, access to his personal doctor, regular family visits and twice-weekly calls with his sons.
Yet those orders are being defied.
This is no longer simply a Pakistani political matter. It is a human-rights emergency.
He has deep and lifelong ties to Britain. He studied at Oxford University, captained Oxford University cricket and spent years playing county cricket in England. His relationship with this country stretches back more than half a century. His charitable activities were internationally recognised, and include building the only free cancer hospital in Pakistan as well as a university.
His sons, my two boys, Sulaiman and Kasim, are British citizens. They have been forced to watch their father’s health decline from thousands of miles away, prevented from visiting him, denied visas, publicly threatened by government officials with arrest themselves, and even denied court-mandated regular phone calls.
I have repeatedly appealed to the UK government to intervene. Purported attempts at back channelling have evidently failed. The previous Foreign Secretary @DavidLammy informed me in writing that Britain would not intervene if my sons, British citizens, are arrested when they travel to Pakistan to visit their father.
@FCDOGovUK: Britain must now speak out publicly and unequivocally. Demand that Pakistan comply with its own Supreme Court; restore Imran Khan’s medical access, his right to see his family, end his prolonged isolation and uphold his fundamental human rights.
Pakistan is a Commonwealth country. Britain has a long and proud tradition of standing against arbitrary detention, inhumane treatment and the denial of fundamental rights. Those principles mean very little if we invoke them only selectively and neglect them when inconvenient.
This an appeal to the new Burnham government to please now do the right thing.
#PAKWatch🇵🇰: Today, after a Supreme Court decision, IMRAN KHAN went to Shifa Hospital before being immediately SENT BACK TO ADIALA JAIL BY THE CORRUPT PAK GOV'T.
FIELD MARSHAL ASIM MUNIR'S CORRUPT PAK GOV'T = 3RD WORLD = TIME TO TAKE THE EXIT DOOR.
MORE CRUEL & INHUMANE TREATMENT OF CAPTAIN PAKISTAN.
Global Embarrassment
The government’s clumsy and ridiculous manner of “implementing” the Supreme Court’s order regarding Imran Khan’s health has brought disgrace and humiliation upon this government internationally.
The Supreme Court’s clear order was that Imran Khan should be taken to Shifa Hospital, where a medical board comprising Shifa’s doctors, in the presence of Imran’s personal physician and his sister, Dr. Uzma, would examine him, and that he would remain ostensibly there until September 16, when the court was to review the entire record.
At 12:23, Imran Khan was taken to PIMS Hospital, and at 5:00 he was declared healthy and sent back to jail.
This clearly demonstrates that the Shehbaz government was unwilling to comply with the Supreme Court’s order. Playing fast and loose with the law has long been the PML-N’s modus operandi—whether it was removing Junejo from the party presidency and creating the PML-N, the Memogate case, the attack on the judiciary, Nawaz Sharif’s platelet case, or the case of Imran Khan.
Had the government honestly implemented the Supreme Court’s decision, it would have deserved appreciation, political pressure would have eased, and an environment conducive to dialogue with the PTI would have emerged. But the PML-N leadership, blinded by its hatred for Imran Khan, appears determined to settle old scores.
Now condemnation is raining down from around the world.
And political tensions in the country will intensify further. So, whose bed will be rolled up next? Let us see. How long will the Field Marshal tolerate the stench of the hybrid system, when his office (CDSO) has, through an emergency amendment, been made autonomous from and superior to the Ministry of Defence, with sweeping powers?
It seems the Sharif Company has lost its bearings. It does not want PTI to settle its differences with the military. Yet Zulfi Bukhari, one of Imran Khan’s closest associates, welcomed the Supreme Court’s decision and had assured that there would be peaceful coexistence with the establishment.
Now the question is whether the Supreme Court will stand firm over its contempt, or whether the Shehbaz government will quietly retreat with its tail between its legs.
And if the PPP joins the Grand Opposition after the inclusion of Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who will save the PML-N’s lights from being extinguished, when the CDS office has become autonomous and beyond the Ministry of Defence, while the unemployed Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, shamelessly sits outside the ministry’s door, crying over the same old grievances?
