Safe roads are fundamental to achieve the goals of the newly launched UN Decade of Sustainable Transport.

Each year, over one million people lose their lives on the world’s roads. The burden falls disproportionately on low- and middle-income countries, and on vulnerable road users such as pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, children, older persons and persons with disabilities.

Road traffic injuries remain the leading cause of death globally for people aged 5–29, underscoring systemic failures in how roads are planned, designed and operated.

The UN Decade of Sustainable Transport highlights the Safe System approach as a foundation for change: accepting that human error is inevitable, but serious injury and death are not. Safer outcomes depend on evidence-based interventions across the system, from safer infrastructure and vehicles, to speed management, post-crash care, enforcement and shared responsibility among planners, operators and users.

When safety is built into road infrastructure design, walking, cycling and public transport can become safer, healthier and lower-carbon choices.

At IRF, together with our partners, we are committed to advancing Safe Roads aligned with the targets of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, embedding proven safety principles into planning, design, construction, maintenance and operation.
