It's kind of weird seeing malls depicted as victims of neoliberal capitalism when less than 20 years ago malls were seen as the ultimate expressions of capitalism and commercialism that had driven Main Street out of business.
@jmhorp That's honestly pretty good returns for a commodity. I'm guessing most of it was early on + last few years? And tbf you couldn't buy an index fund in 1971 either. And I'm guessing the $8.5M doesn't account for taxes which would bite into stocks more than gold.
At a certain point I realize I'm on the 20% side of an 80-20 issue, and it's hard to grapple with, because the movement against data centers seems like a mass panic, akin to people suddenly worried about witchcraft.
The college wage premium has not fallen recently and the net cost of college has slightly fallen over the past decade+. "College is dying because it's less worth it" isn't really true. What is true is that the number of 18 year olds in the US will fall every year from now on.
After this data center backlash, I think we can say there won’t be an AI unemployment crisis. If AI caused as much as ~10% unemployment there’d be an earthquake of political unrest at the companies. They’d be lucky if all that happened to them was expropriation
@TanaJudson@jkenney The system has a really strong preference for younger people which for obvious reasons is negatively correlated with experience and achievement. If you’re over 30 it’s almost impossible to get PR unless you know French.
@ianollis@RM_Transit 160 mph is plenty fast and more than 2x highway speeds. Top speed in Spain and Italy are only a bit faster (~185mph). TGV is 200~. Hokkaido Shinkansen is 160mph. The og Shinkansen was actually only 130 mph.
Bigger issue is the slow sections.
George HW Bush lost the presidency and Bill Clinton lost Congress because they both made difficult decisions on raising taxes and reining in spending that ended deficits, so subsequent American political leaders collectively said "Let's never do that again!"
The people simply want an economy with no unemployment, a very high minimum wage and very low prices, affordable housing but high home equity, low taxes but excellent public services, and the stock market to give massive returns.
Politicians are very mean for denying them this.
