*NeoTest* aims to change that by creating an advance market commitment for better rapid diagnostics for neonatal sepsis.
The goal: help bring affordable, accurate tests to the babies and health systems that need them most.

Life-saving breakthroughs can come from repurposing existing (generic) drugs, but there's almost no incentive to do so. Grateful to join a thoughtful @Freakonomics discussion on the promise of generic drug repurposing and how innovative funding tools can unlock its potential
Scientists at singapore infected male mosquitoes with a bacteria called wolbachia and unleashed them into the environment.
Female mosquitoes, after mating with these males, produce dead eggs that never hatch due to cytoplasmic incompatibility.
The results - A massive crash in mosquito populations and a 71-72% plunge in dengue infections among residents in treated areas.
Do you love bringing structure to ambitious work? We’re hiring a Senior Program Manager to be the operational lead for the Market Shaping Accelerator to keep people, projects, and budgets on track as we design AMCs & other pull mechanisms. 🚀
@EdwardJDavey As an NHS doctor, on our ward, we can have multiple patients sleeping in the corridor on the ward. We need to improve services and support in the community to help patients get their acute treatment and get out of hospital!
@rglenner@LeahRosenzweig V interesting. Physicians are time poor w/ regards to counselling on things like vaccination, health behaviour change etc. To me the central qn is how we make sure chatbots are trustworthy, and how we build confidence in physicians + patients/family that they can be trusted.
1/ Great post on mining Reddit to inform treatment ideas. Lots of promising treatments never get tested bc trials are exp + lacking IP protections. However, this problem is too large for a few altruistic people/orgs to tackle. Instead, we need govt $ to focus on the following 🧵
@patrickc There's a website that crowdsource patient data on what works for them in managing common chronic conditions, esp where treamtents may not be patentable - it's called https://t.co/8V29UtS0Rs. I think a govt program that aggregates public observational data would be v valuable
Have you caught up with the latest @CGDev podcast?
Two of CGD's working group members on neonatal sepsis, Lord Jim O’Neill & Dr. Akhil Bansal, join @rglenner to discuss how an AMC could help incentivize the development of a diagnostic and more. ⬇️🎧

I'm doing more @CGDev podcast hosting. Listen & give me feedback. Who else would you like to hear me interview?
Here I ask Lord Jim O'Neill & Dr. Bansal about spurring innovation into a diagnostic for sepsis. Why sepsis diagnostic? Why incentives? How best to prompt innovation.
Neonatal sepsis kills hundreds of thousands of babies each year.
In a new @CGDev podcast, CGD working group members Lord Jim O’Neill & Dr. Akhil Bansal join @rglenner to discuss how an advanced market commitment could help tackle the crisis & more. ⬇️

The lack of a fast diagnostic for neonatal sepsis costs lives and worsens AMR.
@CGDev & @UChi_MSA make the case for an advance market commitment—focusing on the conditions where the impact would be greatest:

Neonatal sepsis claims as many as 700,000 lives per year, but diagnosing it in time is challenging. @FIND's Birgitta Gleeson joined a working group convened by the Center for Global Development @CGDev and the Market Shaping Accelerator @UChi_MSA that aims to develop an advance market commitment for an RDT for neonatal sepsis in LMICs. We need #DiagnosisForAll

MSA convened leading experts from economics, clinical care, policy, and industry for the first @CGDev NeoTest Working Group meeting. The group will develop market based incentives to accelerate rapid diagnostic innovation for neonatal sepsis in low- and middle-income countries.
@AkhilBansalsa@rachelbnfield@apmcdonnell@siddhharia
Half a million newborn babies die of sepsis every year.
Its easily treatable with antibiotics but there is no rapid diagnostic test so doctors are left guessing.
Very exciting that CGD is working on a solution!
Creating a successful advanced market commitment for neonatal sepsis diagnostics takes more than funding.
In the final part of series from @CGDev & @UChi_MSA, experts set out how the new working group intends to make the AMC happen:
