Today at the Ethiopia Digital Payments Conference 2.0 in Addis Ababa, H.E. Wamkele Mene, Secretary-General of the AfCFTA Secretariat, commended Ethiopia’s progress in building an inclusive and interoperable digital payments ecosystem, noting its role in boosting Ethiopia’s competitiveness and advancing Africa’s broader integration under the #AfCFTA.

The Conference also saw the launch of a new National Digital Payments Strategy and an Instant Payment System. These are critical accelerators for seamless cross-border trade, expanding MSME participation and driving Africa’s digital future.

H.E. Wamkele Mene, Secretary-General of the @AfCFTA Secretariat, participated in the 25th EAC MSMEs Trade Fair held in Nairobi, Kenya.

He noted that the AfCFTA is more than an agreement; it is a catalyst for industrial growth. He emphasised that MSMEs are the backbone of Africa’s economy but face challenges in accessing finance, not due to a lack of liquidity but because of bankability.

He called for a joint action plan with the UN and RECs to engage development finance institutions to unlock capital for MSME development.

The #AfCFTA Protocol on Digital Trade annexes on digital payments, FINTECH etc should be designed to address these issues or else it will be difficult to inspire business and consumer confidence in intra-African digital trade.
