Years ago I participated in "fight apathy" on the delusion we would all sit in a bar discussing nerdy things like corporate integration.
Now no ones apathetic and everyone is discussing stupider things. I regret my participation.
@garybasin I don’t know, I think the problem is more OpenAI isn’t selling it well? How many people know they exist? I’d imagine for lawyers gpt pro would be very useful and yet I don’t think they know too much about its existence.
@AviWoolf It is really frustrating to tutor computer science, which I sometimes do. They used to want to learn it now they just call me when the AI couldn’t figure it out, expecting me to figure it out for them, and I try to probe their fundamentals and nothing.
@US_Macauley@robinhanson Even pump and dumps aren’t “fraud” per se, they are market manipulation. Which you can base on say spoofing or making fake orders or whatever. But market manipulation because you published investigative journalism?
@US_Macauley@robinhanson “This stock will go up” stock goes up by 10%. Then you sell.
Thats fraud? The stock went up. I said it would. Am I required to hold my positions infinitely? There’s no law about that.
@US_Macauley@robinhanson “Short this company, this company is doing illegal things and is a zero” he was prosecuted for saying this, even though the company was a zero!
@US_Macauley@robinhanson That’s not what the word “false” means. False means untrue. If I recommend you buy a product, and then I sell you that product, am I committing fraud? Exiting a position right away doesn’t mean anything. His claims usually ended up being correct.
@US_Macauley@robinhanson He was honest. The fraud theory is that it was “misleading” because he sold right away. There is not a single thing he was convicted on where he said something false.
@dilanesper@LeahLibresco@AlexanderTurok Admittedly I don’t know what his policies are. I’ve seen 3 speeches from him, all of them populist slop railing against the “Epstein class.” So is this about policy? Or the fact that he calls himself a Democrat?
@dilanesper@LeahLibresco@AlexanderTurok There’s no coherent answer to this other than this sort of reasoning is how we end up with Ken Paxton, Platner, and Trump, and ends up in where decency is lost in government and the voter still doesn’t get what they want. Is Platner gonna design a good health care plan?
@ctindale@muddywatersre Did you happen to read what the justice department said in that press release? Lots of people keep linking it. The theory put forward in that press release isn’t even the theory used to convict Left, otherwise all short selling is illegal! Please articulate your own arguments
@chymeriatics@neoavatara The only people who have done anything to remotely close the door are the conservative justices on the Supreme Court, and for their efforts many of those people what to blow that institution up l
@courtneybuble All for it this is great but “Americans should not have to sell plasma to access court records” are there … people doing this? Seems a bit extreme!
@dilanesper I know this is stupid but in middle school a textbook cited DNA evidence as “bad use of statistics” because a 1/1,000,000 match probability implies 300 people it could be in the US, not dispositive. It’s not logical but some of my skepticism draws from that. Is that wrong?
