@Marcelle50008@nov5000818@MHR5000818 Here's to hoping Marcelle. I have been surprised by the amount of homelessness I have encountered during my placement and waiting for accommodation for discharge is not a quick process.
@MHR5000818 . The appreciation I gained from placement was regarding individuals delusional and belief systems. As a student I was able to take the time to listen, ask questions and understand the reality for consumers. Once you know their reality, their behaviour makes sense.
@upeksha5000818 @MHR5000818 I agree. The importance of good sleep can be easy to disregard but it is so important! I have come up against barriers trying to speak with acutely manic consumers regarding sleep. Many have denied not sleeping for days when collateral information says otherwise.
@sally5000818@MHR5000818 Thank you for posting. I think motivational interviewing is an essential skill in gauging a clients readiness for change in a matter of areas, whether it is alcohol consumption, or recovery itself. If they are wanting to change, we can help to give them the tools to succeed.
@Lozmeow5000818@MHR5000818 It has gone so quickly. My favourite parts have been talking with consumers and really practicing my therapeutic listening. It is actually really helpful and really getting good at MSE's. Still finding MSE's difficult with the really guarded consumers, but ive had fun.
@Christie5000818@MHR5000818 Interesting thought @Christie5000818 . Perhaps their funding allocations for 'physical health' resources are actually less? Social workers, OT's and psychologists cost a bit?? I'm not sure? Trying to rationalise?
@MHR5000818 . Interested in peoples thoughts regarding nursing care for 'mental health issues' versus 'physical health issues'. Although a focus on addressing mental health is positive I feel consumers physical health issues are sometimes ignored or not addressed sufficiently.
@clark_5000818@Aya5000818@MHR5000818 This is good to hear as I have witnessed many burnt out mental health nurses. As a brand new nurse wanting into the field of mental health it is easy to become discouraged.
@Marcelle50008@MHR5000818 Thank you for sharing. I think I'm going to make one for myself :). What a nice visual and accessible reminder of the ways we cope best. It's easy to forget the strategies that work for us sometimes. Especially when we need them most.
@Christie5000818@MHR5000818 . I have found the same @Christie5000818 . It seems easy for staff to sometimes go straight for medication. Although I've seen medication transform people, unfortunately it does not address the plethora of other social/economic factors that continue to exist
@Aaliya5000818@MHR5000818@Bianca5000818 . Thanks for posting everyone. I have also been challenged in this way. My tactics were much the same as yours, however. Giving space and engaging on their level.
@elise5000818@MHR5000818 I think that is probably the most important this Elise. I helped a consumer to connect with second opinion services and the independent mental health advocacy service. Making sure they are aware of their rights and informed about their treatment as much as possible.
@mikhala5000818 @Cassie5000818@MHR5000818 I agree. The input from the patient is so important. I have found the staff where I am are very attentive to consumers concerns and this is so nice to see.
@Kritina5000818@MHR5000818 In my experience this far, doctors have expressed that ECT has much quicker results than taking pills for seeing positive change in depressive symptoms. I found this interesting. It makes sense but wasn't something I was aware of.
@annie5000818@MHR5000818 Annie. I also have noticed this and I believe overall it can be an incredibly positive part of inpatient treatment. Also challenging at times, but I have seen some incredible mutual support witnessed. How do you feel about the interaction? x
@emily_5000818@MHR5000818 This is an interesting article. In my experience, I have known individuals who were considered morbidly obese and had dramatic weight loss to the point of then being considered to have Anorexia. I hope that regardless of diagnosis or weight rapid weight loss is taken seriously.
@Alli5000818@MHR5000818 Thanks for posting. As someone who works with eating disorders, I have been interested in perceptions surrounding the film. I think it does create awareness of the more 'real, less pretty' parts of the illness. My concern lies around if people deem it a glamorous representation.
@Emma_5000818@annie5000818@emily_5000818@MHR5000818 I agree with the severity and BMI. That's good to hear about your friend, if in fact that diagnoses helped her. I think sometimes Anorexia can be seen as the most visible eating disorder and not taken seriously unless they are seriously emaciated.
