Reasons to buy less plastic in the first place ⬇️ Nobody’s perfect, but even small steps help. What plastic can you eliminate? Grocery bags, produce bags, big plastic laundry detergent bottles, single use coffee cups are easy to replace to start… but there’s so much more too.
You probably think plastic you throw into recycling bins will be… recycled.
The reality, however, is the vast majority heads to the landfill — only around 5% of plastic is actually being repurposed, according to a Greenpeace report.

An excellent show last weekend at the beautiful @cvilleparamount! Congratulations to @valverdefernan and everyone involved.

"For access to credentials to yield better labor market returns, schools need to adopt deliberate strategies that generate economic connectedness for students that matriculate on the wrong side of opportunity gaps."

Framing is so important! I've also used "student hours", and I find suggesting things students can come talk about helps (i.e. the class, an assignment, but also career aspirations, life in general...).
Looking forward to the new Dean joining SCPS. Excited to work with an accomplished and promising leader. Welcome, Dean Lubin!

As Hollie Lee shares, the @UVASCPS program gives students a chance to get their foot in the door in an industry that may be new to them, while also practicing key professional skills in the interview process:

I also find it helpful to start the first day of class with an activity, help students get to know each other, break down the tension in the room before moving into logistics
Helping first gen and low-income students navigate college courses and culture is essential to their success. This is true for adult learners, as well as the traditional four-year undergraduate learners.

@matthewdrichey Yikes. Activated charcoal filters can help, but that only benefits those in a geographic and socioeconomic position to buy them. Extremely problematic for many parts of the world. And devastating for animal life that relies on natural sources of water.
Charlottesville is a beautiful and resilient community.

Burnout and a lack of work-life balance have affected faculty and staff in higher ed for too long - these are needed shifts in perspectives and expectations to prioritize wellbeing, quality work and retention. Kudos to @Cornell for taking this step.

Learning from @Metacog1 about #metacognition and #equity at the virtual #Peralta equity conference. It's important to actively involve our students in the conversation about metacognition, intentional course design, and learning objectives.
As an undergrad and #FirstGen student, I benefitted immensely from @UVA's #FinancialAid and #AccessUVA program. Happy to see the level of support rise to provide greater access for today's undergrads.
