Your roadmap isn't a strategy. It's a treaty.
A negotiated settlement between competing interests, ratified once a quarter, renegotiated the moment a signatory changes roles.
Which is why it goes stale in six weeks and why adding teams to move it faster makes it slower.
A great Product Manager leaving shouldn't throw your roadmap into chaos.
If it does, you don't have a people problem, you have a systems problem.
I wrote about what actually happens when a PM leaves and how the best product organizations prepare for it.
Over the last two years product teams adopted the entire AI stack. ChatGPT, Copilot, Notion AI.
And then nothing changed. The roadmap is still a negotiation. Alignment still takes a quarter.
I call this the ChatGPT Plateau.
This Allbirds story is so insane:
→ $BIRD IPO'd in 2021 at a $4 billion valuation
→ Silicon Valley's favorite shoe
→ Lost 99.5% of its value in 4 years
→ Closed every US store
→ Sold the entire brand for $39 million
→ Renamed itself "NewBird AI"
→ Using $50M to buy GPUs and compete with AWS
→ Stock up 450% today on 875x normal volume
This is the most unhinged corporate pivot of the decade and the newest meme stock entrant
@Alfred_Lin Talkers and Passengers thrive in corporate environments and never leave. Clearing that layer is difficult but doable (with a lot of work). Unfortunately it then boils down to incentives to get there (in corporate at least).
@jonoringer The problem is companies could get away with legacy systems because of another moat to lean on. Now all moats are up for grab. I’ve worked in companies who’ve realized this impending path and didn’t have the culture and conviction to course correct. It’s going to be interesting.
@andrewchen The best part of this ‘creator mode’ wave is the niche software and services that are too small of a TAM for IBM/Microsoft/Google but good enough for someone to solve a real problem and make a living. Founders were the outliers, but that gap is closing.
@FredaDuan The functional translation layers have always needed to collapse, but territoriality prevented it. It will get flat now with skills commodity. However the onus is even bigger on leaders to have a clear vision and communicate it faster.
@chamath 100% agree with simplifying the life stack. But it’s a bell curve from living and learning. Even a 28 year old @elonmusk wanted a McClaren F1.
@JasonrShuman Agreed, favorite metaphor with AI and it’s application into SMBs and enterprise is via the Comet Theory:
1. Technology drives behavior change (the comet).
2. Businesses adapt much slower (the long trail behind it).
3. That gap is a perfect agency opportunity.
Massive gap now.
