Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich says Israel has no interest in joining U.S. military operations against Iran, calling a conflict limited to the U.S. and Iran “best for us.”

America sends Israel billions in military aid, links its military infrastructure ever more closely with Israel’s, and risks sending U.S. troops to fight and die in a war tied to Israeli security interests. Yet Israel’s government signals it would rather direct the conflict from the sidelines than put its own forces into it.

What does that say about the U.S.–Israel relationship? Is America acting as a sovereign nation, or as a country whose foreign policy has been captured by another state’s priorities?
