We Uruguayans produce some of the best beef in the world, with quality, traceability, and the hard work of thousands of rural producers.

I have just learned of the decision to grant 300,000 tons of access to the U.S. market to Brazil and Paraguay, while Argentina received 80,000 tons last year.

Uruguay is the smallest country in Mercosur and, nevertheless, has a great cattle-raising tradition and produces exceptionally high-quality beef. Our rural sector should not be held responsible for political decisions made by our government.

I am the President of the International Affairs Committee of the Uruguayan Parliament and, at the same time, a rancher and agricultural producer. I know firsthand the effort of our producers and what it means for Uruguay to have fair access to major international markets.

That is why I ask you, President Trump, for a little balance and consideration for Uruguay.

We are not asking for privileges. We are asking for a fair opportunity to compete.

Rural Uruguay is a friend of the United States and shares with you values of freedom, hard work, democracy, and respect for private property.

Please do not forget Uruguay. We may be small in territory and population, but we are great in production, quality, and friendship.
