When @andyburnham becomes Prime Minister, will he do things differently?

Will he meet with @VIBUK_Official?

Will he listen directly to the vaccine injured and bereaved? And will he urgently commit to reforming the VDPS, as the @covidinquiryuk has recommended…so it is fair, compassionate and fit for purpose?

We've met ministers, secured debates, raised questions in Parliament, given evidence to the COVID Inquiry, and delivered a letter to Downing Street.

We've campaigned for reform, we have used FOI to get the facts and shared our stories in the hope that the vaccine injured and bereaved would finally be heard.

Yet meaningful action has remained lacking.

We're not asking for sympathy we're asking for leadership, urgency, and action.

We remain hopeful that a new chapter could bring a different approach.

It is now 10 weeks since the COVID Inquiry published its recommendations on reform of the Vaccine Damage Payment Scheme. And 5 years since the first Covid vaccine injuries and deaths.

We are told a Government response is due by 16 October, but only because the Inquiry has required it. There has been no sign of urgency or meaningful communication from Government in the meantime. If there was real urgency, it is fair to ask why those affected are still waiting for even basic clarity at this stage.

This is made more difficult by the fact we met with the then Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, @wesstreeting , in September 2024 to raise these concerns directly. Despite that meeting, and the Inquiry’s clear recommendations since, there is still no indication of how — or even whether — reform is being taken forward.

For vaccine injured people and bereaved families, this ongoing silence is hard to reconcile with the seriousness of what has been experienced and acknowledged. It adds to a growing sense of abandonment.

More broadly, this goes to trust in public health policy and the wider social contract. That trust depends not just on schemes existing in name, but on transparency, timely communication, and follow-through when systems are found wanting.

At the moment, “considering” is all we are hearing — without any indication of what that actually means in reality.

No Covid vaccine is 100% safe or effective.

Every covid vaccine has killed or maimed someone.

Yet there is only state benefits and an archaic system from the 1970's that currently rejects over 99.99% of all covid vaccine claims.

But we’re told it’s "rare" to reassure us.

Imagine if 666 people had been seriously harmed in a plane crash. Or a series of building collapses. Or a widespread fault in a public transport system. Would that still be considered rare enough to dismiss?

Would we brush it off with a few lines in a report, or would it trigger headlines, and urgent support for those affected?

When harm happens in the context of public health, the response should be no different. The Vaccine injured and bereaved aren’t just statistics—they’re individuals whose lives have been permanently altered. And they deserve more than quiet acknowledgement. They deserve recognition, support, and a system that doesn’t minimise their experience.

So yes, based on these figures maybe it’s statistically rare. But that doesn’t mean it’s insignificant.

Campaigners have met with the Health Secretary as they call for changes to the compensation scheme for people left injured by COVID-19 vaccines.

Gareth Eve's wife Lisa died after receiving an AstraZeneca jab, while Kate Scott's husband Jamie was left with brain damage.

Both say their fight isn't anti-vaccine, but about getting fair financial support for those whose lives have been changed by adverse reactions.
