@joenutt_author@Starcourse@Miss_Snuffy Schools are more than just fantastic exam results but they help opportunity! For someone w/daughter at an independent school couple of miles from Michaela, I sure am envious of their strong academic results, student hunger to achieve high grades & the expectations put of pupils!
@katie74RT And there you have it, the truth all along. Student politics fueled by inferiority complexes (love living rent free in Alex’s head!) crusty chips and an attempt to thwart parental aspiration. 🤦🏻♀️ Reality is parents will just jimmy the state system harder, reducing social mobility!
@anaboultertv@GuyEmma68700@AndrewHWestern Declining primary rolls provide an excellent opportunity to improve state provision - reducing class sizes, teacher workload and improving staff/student ratios.
ONLY reason my 8 yo SEND daughter is in an independent school is because she couldn’t function in a class of 31!
@CWilksy_78@ballater6 State schools can & do run deficits - roughly 15% currently are!
Ironically Labour’s reduced education spend is going to hit even harder! Who will you blame for poor outcomes then? Who else are you going to tax to make up the deficit? Early year fees? How about uni fees?
@etaknipsa@ballater6 When numbers drop in the state sector govt closes schools. How does same not apply in the independent sector?
VAT was applied to FEES! Parents pay fees, not schools. Schools are closing because +40k kids have left.
Schools & parents tried to absorb but instead you blame them!🤦🏻♀️
@etaknipsa@ballater6 Your response demonstrates wider confusion on how VAT has impacted schools!
You’re assuming schools were responsible for offsetting the impact of VAT when in reality it was added to fees, which parents haven’t been able to absorb! You’re blaming the wrong people!!
@rwoolfy29@apsamuelson@Elephantastick@SLK_2017@bienbutcher The original plan was to remove charitable status but the advice the govt received was that it would be challenged and they’d lose. So they opted for VAT instead. A crude tool which has opened the door to much wider taxation of educational services.
@Catheri81336327@joenutt_author@SLK_2017@apsamuelson@bienbutcher Media have details, they respect the children and don’t disclose but needless to say Starmer’s daughter enjoys an outstanding secondary school education in North London favoured by many Labour leaders eg Milliband. Toped up with extracurriculars delivered in independent schools!
@apsamuelson@Fat_Jacques@joenutt_author@SLK_2017@bienbutcher Bigger issue is that education, like health, has too much political interference and isn’t allowed to develop and be delivered based on evidence and excellence.
It’s the poor relation to health simply due to scale & budget. Health lobby is bigger = no VAT on private healthcare!
@Fat_Jacques@joenutt_author@SLK_2017@apsamuelson@bienbutcher Ppl who demonise independent ed don’t understand there is already ample choice (or inequality) in system - it’s a perspective thing.
Buy house/rent in good catchment, church for 5yrs, tutor from yr 3 for 11+. Some parents will make choices, others will simply use local school.
@apsamuelson@SLK_2017@bienbutcher Not exactly, those MPs have been supportive of VAT since Corbyn but had been held back by the progressive part of the party. Starmer saw an opportunity to win support internally and externally w/ a pet topic - they used a biased think tank and researchers as their evidence base
@SLK_2017@apsamuelson@bienbutcher It requires an understanding of ed policy rather than simple media headlines, political soundbites or simplistic social media posts. This Labour party chose an easy target, based on biased data/assumptions. We’re now seeing the unintended consequences of their poor policy making!
@TheEconomist Where were you and the other msm questioning when Labour trailed it in their election manifesto or when they got into office.
You failed to scrutinise and hold Labour to account. Articles and criticisms now are too late! 👏
@SLK_2017@apsamuelson@bienbutcher THIS!
Starmer’s kids aren’t at a failing comp in Islington, are they?
Are Phillipson’s kids in an underperforming school in the North East?
No, they buy excellence via housing in the best catchment areas, through accepted choice eg ‘pray or pay’, academies or grammar schools!
@bienbutcher Analysis always showed policy was going to be damaging, disproportionately affecting vulnerable groups. Civil servants told ministers the risks but Labour were determined to implement envy-based manifesto commitment. Giving too much credit when it’s clear the maths never mathed!
@DebTon20@dapper200@FT Funny they never look at it that way! 40k+ families were previously paying their own way while not using a state place. Fees were partly going to the treasury in NI & VAT, now added to pension pots, overpaying mortgages or reduced work hrs. Taxpayers are now footing full bill 🤦🏻♀️
