@MsLeeABC123 I definitely still use nonmeasurement reasoning today more than I do measurement reasoning. I honestly don’t feel comfortable saying something looks like it’s x amount of ft or inches away but I am comfortable saying it looks you could fit 2 queen sized beds in there #OSUElemMath
@Michellelorene1@DelaneyMathews1 Reminds me of my 1126 class. The teacher would legit solve 2-3 problems for us using a proof and then we would be tested on one of those 3. Aka I would just memorize all 3 and copy word for word what my notes said because she would takes points off if not. #OSUElemMath
@Miss_Heck I think the rule that says you just add the number of 0's you have when multiplying for example 1000*100 was a rule that really messed with me. I still struggle with place value and I think instead of just giving me this meaningless rule, I should have been taught why it works
@MrsN_Trimble @MissTrigg_Cbus Or that's super cool that you'll be leading a math lesson....What will you do if there is a child who does not have a strategy in mind?
@themisspeppers I saw the importance of this with my buddy. We tried a measurement div. prob and she worked through it as though it was a multip. prob so I changed it to a partitive div. prob and she successfully did it, so for her changing the story was vital to building that understanding
@Miss_Heck Yeah this for real sounds so fun and engaging. And how cool that they ended up coming up with their own problems based on the real life experiences they just had in class.
Q13: Thinking now to your placement or classrooms you've been in before, where have you seen either aspects of the 3 act tasks or a lesson that followed all 3 acts? How did the 3 act tasks or aspects of it further students thinking/understanding? #OSUElemMath
@MsLee70686573 @TheMissHirsch I really like the visual connection between the circles and the lines, that would have been a very helpful visual for me as a child to see why/how 5 is more than 3.
@themissahmad@TheMissHirsch I like they have so many math centers options! Are these math centers done during math time or during centers time or are they there for exploration at all times?
@themissahmad I like that you're thinking about the 3 act task from a more ela perspective too because it could definitely work across subjects. Did you find anything interesting about why the students were coloring in the wrong letter?
@Michellelorene1 @MsLee70686573 Totally agree Michelle! The explanation behind why they said 2 trees is far more important than that objective right answer of 3
@DelaneyMathews1@TheMissHirsch I think it's important that you guys go back and recount once you've put your objects in all the groups, my CT models re-counting a lot saying that mathematicians double check all the time
@MrsN_Trimble@TheMissHirsch It's funny you say they're learning it as repeated addition because that's how my Buddy for math described multiplication to me during our interview. Does the idea of it being repeated addition seem to make sense to the students?
@ClovettaC@TheMissHirsch My CT does this as well and I love how simple yet effective it is. It's a very authentic way to present bundling 10 to students
@MrsN_Trimble Yes! I love that there wasn't a specific given amount for cars or trucks, just the total. I see the kids in my placement struggle with questions like that and I think that the exploration in the prob you did in class is what they need to see how the total and the 2 parts relate
@ChelseyAnglin On that's awesome because clearly the shapes directly relate to the lesson and honestly shapes are fun so I'm glad your classroom is approaching them that way!
@ChelseyAnglin@TheMissHirsch Do you notice most students using that strategy to represent their multiplication? Or do students have all different kinds of strategies?
