In #SamplingMars, I’m building a real science treasure chest, and my latest samples may be the most valuable yet. Some have organic molecules – but from ancient biology, or another process? Sending them back to Earth could help us figure it out.

Hey #IAC2022 participants, are you in town already? We just flew over Paris, here is a picture of you all. Best wishes for a great conference from Low Earth Orbit! @IACParis2022#MissionMinerva
Found a slimy #astrobiology surprise in my backyard today! This is Nostoc commune, a colony of cyanobacteria. They are very tough #microbes and can survive extreme conditions - they even went to space! One day they might be a source of oxygen and food for #astronauts on #Mars 🚀
After collecting the samples, LRU2 acts as a courier and brings the samples safely to the RODIN lunar
lander. 📦 GEO I demonstration for #ARCHES22 completed. 🦾Next up GEO II. Stay tuned! 🤩
#RobotsOnEtna
The terrain data acquired by LRU1 helps guide LRU2 to places where it makes sense to collect samples. 📍 Using its shovel, LRU2 collects sand. With its robotic arm, it collects a rock 🪨 and places both into the sample container – the payload box. #RobotsOnEtna#ARCHES22
Our robots are currently working hard in wind 🌬️ and heat ☀️ for #ARCHES22. On Mount #Etna at an altitude of ~2600m they are testing effective cooperation in different mission scenarios. More ℹ️ about our #RobotsOnEtna: https://t.co/b7c4bGNhVI
Excellent #teamwork between our #RobotsOnEtna yesterday 🦾 – @esa’s Interact & @DLR_de’s Scout rover were part of the GEO II demo for #ARCHES22. From #Catania, ~23 km away, German astronaut Thomas Reiter controlled Interact while our @KITKarlsruhe colleague steered Scout. 🕹️
The #ARCHES22 research scenarios were carried out in Mount #Etna’s moonlike environment. 🌘 The tested methods will also benefit life on Earth: robotic systems are used to provide support in environments dangerous for humans, such as inside caves. 🌍
Holy Moly.
The rocks on Mars will never cease to amaze me.
Deposited and shaped by water more than 3 billion years ago when Mars was a balmy planet with rivers and lakes, these sediments might hold the fossils of primitive life. Good thing @NASAPersevere is collecting samples.
There's something afoot. ESA is joining @DLR_en on Mount Etna, Sicily, to test and help develop diverse, autonomous and interconnected robotic systems for helping to explore harsh, vast environments - from the deep sea to space
#RobotsOnEtna
Mission accomplished! ✅ The live demo week for the @helmholtz_de future project #ARCHES22 has come to an end. The different #RobotsOnEtna successfully cooperated to independently carry out tasks such as taking & analysing rock samples & placing hardware:

Weiter geht´s für die #RobotsOnEtna! 🌋 Heute auf dem Programm: die zweite Space-Demo-Mission. Der Interact Rover der @ESA_de und unser DLR-Scout-Rover sind auf dem sizilianischen Vulkan in 2600m Höhe im Einsatz. 🦾 #ARCHES22 1/x
What can autonomous robots do? As part of @helmholtz_en’s #ARCHES22 project, we’re working with partners on Mt Etna 🌋, testing the ways an autonomous robot network can help modern societies & also provide valuable services in space. #RobotsOnEtna

🌑 Moon or 🗻Etna in 🇮🇹?
@esa teaming up with @DLR_en for a final test of controlling robots on the Moon from the lunar Gateway: https://t.co/HRcm56rUMO #RobotsOnEtna
❓ Why are four #robots, a drone, a lunar lander, several expedition containers 🚛🚚, as well as a @DLR_de team of 80 personnel, currently travelling to the #Etna volcano in Sicily? 🌋🇮🇹
Stay tuned for the answer ... coming soon! 😉 #ARCHES#RobotsOnEtna
➡️L'eruzione dell'#Etna continua🌋
Una nuova bocca effusiva si è aperta nella Valle del Bove
La colata lavica è visibile nell'immagine acquisita da #Sentinel2 🇪🇺🛰️il 29 Maggio alle 9:50 UTC

How to make the Microbiological Sample Cocktail: 🍹🦠
1. Sterilize everything
2. Put sample in Falcon tube
3. Get air bubbles out and top off with ethanol
4. Chill at - 20°C till end of expedition
5. Serve to a happy microbiologist!
