Dorothy makes you uncomfortable while watching it & makes you think about it long after the movie is over. In a way, I felt it was a horror movie.
The Whistle Veeraiya character, played by Muthukumaran, was so menacing. Getting his daughter, wife & Dorothy killed. Him, his sons & the entire village, with their sheer disregard for women are absolute monsters. The existence of communities where such blatant disregard for women can still be normalised & live on like nothing has happened gave me chills.
But I found something more horrific. When Karthi tells the mess hotel owner (played by KS's dad Gajaraj - I enjoy the man's performance in all of KS's movies - super character artist), about Veeraiya wanting Karthi to kill his own son because he had turned to a woman, the mess owner, who is established as a nice, harmless guy in the movie, says in the most matter of fact tone, "Paavam enna panradhu, avanuku un kaiyala saavanum nu iruku. Idhuvum oru vidhamaana karuna kolai dhan. Pinna apdiye utra mudiyuma. Kudumbathuku sangadama poidum" Bro, WTF WAS THAT! A seemingly good man whose mind has been so conditioned & normalised that he can actually see killing someone for "turning" as an act of compassion. That was very disturbing!
Absolute screamer of a performance by both Sananth & Rishikanth.
Extraordinary guts by Sananth to play a transgender character & he does it with so much conviction. From being gutsy as a little kid to becoming more withdrawn from fights as an adult, falling in the laps of Dorothy, Dhanam & Karthi's mom to cry, the way he comes out & everything that follows, he completely owns the character. Outstanding bro, it was very authentic, you deserve all the awards.
But I was even more impressed by Rishikanth. I had just watched Modha Rathiri a few days back & instantly started liking him & rooting for him. He absolutely kills it as Karthi, Subbu's best friend. What I loved about his character arc was how relatable it felt. Initially, he's disgusted when his friend comes out as transgender, but eventually he learns to accept Subbu for who she is. That's probably how many of us would react initially. If a male friend suddenly told us that they identified as a woman, most of us probably wouldn't know how to process it. The eventual acceptance is what makes Karthi's arc so beautiful & Rishikanth portrays that transition brilliantly.
I didn't like the ending. It made me uncomfortable. I would have preferred the movie to end when Karthi lets Subbu escape. You have already made your point no? The fact he suddenly realises that he actually loves her & then goes on to kiss her made me uncomfortable. What was the need for it? But of course, that's exactly what KaSu wants to do. Break the shackles, make you uncomfortable & make you think. As long as the debate around it is healthy & civil, I'm all for it. But social media has also unearthed a lot of people being cruel without even watching the movie.
Raja sir's songs, score & the placement of Muthumani were fab. I absolutely loved the way KS elevated Raja sir throughout this project, giving him the flowers he deserves. All the titling & branding, bringing in nostalgia with those old fonts, "Isai: Ilayaraja", "Ilayaraja Innisaiyil", etc. Raja is literally the GOAT, to make him reach more to Gen Alpha through the authentic branding was so well done. @karthiksubbaraj thanks bro. Raja Raja dhaan! ❤️
I did feel there were a lot of loose ends. Dorothy's murder: why was she killed, who exactly killed her? The fact that Veeraiya simply gets away without any consequences? I get it it's intentionally made that way, to show us the horrors of such a world, but idk.
Commercially, I felt the movie had a gripping & engaging first half. The genre shift in the second half slows things down & the film drags a little towards the end. But what cannot be denied is how brave, bold & daring the subject is with performances of a lifetime from both Sananth & Rishikanth.

Why is Ronaldo being trolled/disrespected like this? Ik he's past his prime but undeniably a legend of the game? CR7 na to cook tonight against Spain and prove his haters wrong?

Wake up babe, Mo Bobat has dropped the line of the season. 😉 🫳🎤
The reactions from the players tell us how much they want it. Here’s more from Mo’s dressing room chat after RCB won back to back trophies two nights ago. 🏆❤️✌️
