DAY 4 OF STRIKE : Doctors in #Uttarakhand on a 24 hour strike are sleeping at the protest site on the ground itself . When will the @ukcmo government listen to their demands #internstipendhike
ONLY ONE DEMAND : HIKE STIPEND FROM 17000 TO 30000 PER MONTH
Around 600 MBBS interns across four government medical colleges in Uttarakhand are on strike, demanding their stipend be raised from Rs 17,000 to Rs 30,000. PG resident doctors have joined in too, asking for their stipend to go from Rs 70,000 to Rs 1 lakh.
Think about it. Students spend lakhs of rupees and nearly a decade of their life to become doctors. Fees at Uttarakhand's government medical colleges are already higher than in several other states. And after all that, what do they get paid to work gruelling hospital shifts? Rs 17,000 a month, a figure that hasn't changed since 2017.
Rent, food, books, transport, all of it has gotten costlier since 2017. The stipend hasn't moved an inch.
