Karan Taneja in our Design Intelligence Lab has developed a conversational agent that retrieves document-grounded multi-modal responses to text-based queries: https://t.co/FlrfVOhRZm
This simultaneous retrieval of relevant text and images may foster multimedia learning.
A core issue in the use of GenAI to support learning is whether it promotes critical thinking. The growing consensus is that the use of GenAI reduces the need for critical thinking. In contrast, @PratyushaMaiti in our @dilabgatech found that GenAI can foster critical thinking.
Pratyusha Maiti and Ashok Goel studied the impact of Jill Watson on student questioning behaviors in the classroom. Analyzing learner-generated questions across three semesters and two educational settings, they assessed question complexity.

We’re thrilled to share a fascinating podcast from Silver Lining for Learning featuring the NSF AI Institute for Adult Learning and Online Education!
This episode is all about how AI is revolutionizing online adult education with cutting-edge applications like Jill Watson.
As education evolves in the digital era, artificial intelligence (AI) is poised to revolutionize how students interact with course materials. A pioneering study from experts at @Microsoft, @nvidia, and @GeorgiaTech explores how embedding AI-powered virtual teaching assistants (VTAs) into digital textbooks can enhance learning experiences.
Published in the Proceedings of Machine Learning Research, this work envisions a future where static course materials transform into interactive, adaptive, and student-centric resources, bridging gaps in traditional online education.
From the minds of Audrey Olson, Pratyusha Maiti, and Ashok Goel (@AshKGoel).
