Ethiopia’s ancient Judeo-Christian civilization faces growing threats not only from jihadist movements but also from far-left militant groups and ethnic militias.

In Part 2 of this series, Uzay Bulut examines the role of Marxist-inspired forces, ethnic violence, and government complicity in the persecution of Ethiopian Christians.

Since the conflict began in Amhara region of #Ethiopia, there are disturbing reports of health workers being targeted - detained, beaten, and killed. On Feb 4, Dr. Tsegahun Sime was reportedly taken by security forces in Bahir Dar and later found dead. Hospitals have been damaged in the fighting, and aid workers have lost their lives. With internet blackouts limiting information, these incidents need urgent independent investigation. Health facilities and health workers are not a target.

"The Ethiopian-Dutch Christians are asking the Netherlands to put diplomatic pressure on the Ethiopian authorities to end the violence and to take effective measures to protect civilians and religious communities. They also call for, among other things, an independent, transparent and thorough investigation into the killings in East Arsi and other violent incidents, so that those responsible can be identified and legally held accountable."

Four‑year‑old Tamrat Awgetchew’s leg was amputated. In Ethiopia’s Oromia region, Arsi, it is worth remembering that more than 25 Orthodox Christians were killed in a government‑sponsored attack on Orthodox Christians last week. He was shot repeatedly in the leg during the attack and hospitalized, but today his leg was amputated because of severe injuries.

3. Oromo Region, Arsi Zone, Honkolo Wabe Woreda (Oct 29, 2025; ጥቅምት 18/19 2918 እኢአ)

Total deaths reported in October 2025: 27 (details for 22 provided).

Increased religious and ethnic targeting reported in Arsi Zone, Oromo Region, Ethiopia. On October 24, 2025, 14 people were killed in Guna Woreda, Nono Jawi Kebele, targeted as Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Christians and mostly ethnic Amharas.

- Fanossie Zewde (F, with 3 children)
- Yeshi Melis (F)
- Shibir Shewangizaw (M)
- Helen Mulatu (F)
- Miki Mulatu (M)

On October 28 and 29, 2025, two attacks in Sheka Woreda (3 killed, 4 abducted) and Honkolo Wabe Woreda (5 killed) targeted Orthodox Christians and Amharas. Abducted victims remain missing, causing family distress.

Five killed in Honkolo Wabe Woreda (Oct 29, 2025; names unavailable).

Attackers, reported as “unknown groups,” may include Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), Oromo Liberation Army (OLA), Shanee, Islamic OLF factions (e.g., IFLO), or local militias (list generated based on history of identity based attacks in the area in the past). Updates pending.

Mahbere Kidusan (a congregation based EOTC group) reports 115 deaths in Arsi Zone since September 12, 2023, with 27 in October 2025. Of 37 Orthodox churches, 16 are closed, 3 looted.

Archbishop Yared, overseeing Arsi Zone, allegedly suppressed incident reporting, hindering rescue efforts and implicating EOTC leadership in covering up crimes. The EOTC’s silence on attacks against Amharas and Orthodox Christians risks complicity in genocide.

GPE urges global Orthodox churches to pressure the EOTC Synod to protect its congregation and avoid funding through EOTC channels, as some bishops cover up crimes. Systemic genocide in Ethiopia involves co-opting religious and civic institutions to conceal ongoing atrocities.

Abbreviations:
EOTC - Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church
IFLO - Islamic Front for the Liberation of the Oromo
OLF - Oromo Liberation Front
OLA - Oromo Liberation Army (the military arm of OLF)
OPP - Oromo Prosperity Party (The majority seat holder of the current ruling party Prosperity Party in Ethiopia).
