Now that news is officially out, I am very excited to announce that I will be joining University of Vienna in June to learn more about exoplanet atmospheres! Very happy to be a part of @ArielTelescope family and looking forward to doing a lot of exciting science 😌😍
Meet the Ariel fellows! 🎉
After a very competitive selection, 3 Ariel Postdoctoral Fellowships have been awarded by University of Chalmers and University of Vienna
Huge congratulations and a warm welcome to Gopal, Oliver and Niloofar!

When IISERs first started, they used to pay scholarships to every student.
Then those scholarships ceased, but students who earned KVPY or DST Inspire fellowships received financial support.
Then KVPY was stopped. Now it appears that DST Inspire is gone too👇
Meanwhile the fees have continued to go up. Now it’s close to 60K per semester.
Slowly but surely IISERs are being put beyond the reach of financially weak but talented Indian students. We have barely heard a word of protest from Indian academics on this.
I'll be talking about the atmospheric evaporation from exoplanets today at IUCAA. If some of you are around IUCAA Pune, please feel free to drop by :)
Venue: Bhaskara-3, IUCAA

Glad to share the press release of our recent work where we have mapped 3D magnetic field inside the Sun combining solar surface observations with a 3D dynamo model. Thanks to @IITKanpur and param sanganak for all support!
Decades of surface observations reveal our Sun’s mysterious magnetic interior
Researchers at IIT Kanpur have achieved a major scientific breakthrough by mapping the magnetic field inside the Sun for the first time. By assimilating 30 years of solar surface observations from space satellites into a 3D computational model, the study reveals the magnitude, structure, and evolution of the Sun’s internal magnetic fields over three decades.
Led by Soumyadeep Chatterjee, PhD student, under the guidance of Prof. Gopal Hazra (Department of Physics, IIT Kanpur), the research—published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters—offers critical insights into the solar dynamo, the mechanism that drives the Sun’s 11-year magnetic cycle, sunspots, and solar eruptions.
This data-driven model not only deepens our understanding of solar magnetic activity but also improves predictions of future solar cycles, helping safeguard satellites, power grids, navigation, and communication systems from space-weather disruptions.

We assimilated 10000 daily magnetograms (1996–2025) into a 3D dynamo model & reconstructed both the amplitude and evolution of the interior magnetic field. To the best of our knowledge, this is first observationally guided reconstruction of the Sun’s internal magnetic field!!
The year 2025 is ending with good news ☺️!! First paper of my PhD student Soumyadeep got accepted in the prestigious ApJ Letters (IF=11.7), where we reconstructed magnetic field inside the Sun using data assimilation from observations

Computation being necessary to solve most physics problems, hope these assignments will help students to learn computational physics.

Happy to share that my PhD student Soumyadeep has won the best HPC poster image award 2025 for his 3D simulation of the Sun, where we are assimilating 3 decades of surface observations of Sun to probe its interior. Congratulations to him

Excited to share that my review paper is in arXiv today. This paper gives the basics and overall progress of the field-atmospheric escape from exoplanets, in recent years. It will appear soon in the Reviews of Modern Plasma Physics
