A newly discovered mineral has been named spanoite in honor of ORNL researcher Tyler Spano, recognizing her contributions to mineralogy.

You could call this a “shocking” omission
Sorry I couldn’t “resist”
All kidding aside, in addition to the lack of sham controls, there are real questions about adequacy of the control arms, biologic plausibility of TTF, lack of reliable in vivo dosimetry (a huge potential confounder of outcomes) and regulatory environment which are discussed in depth in the article. Many thanks to @Timothee_MD for leading the project.
Adding consolidative thoracic radiotherapy to atezolizumab maintenance for extensive-stage small cell lung cancer led to more severe toxic effects, mainly infections, without survival benefit compared to atezolizumab alone. https://t.co/NQnMVhHGmk
⭐️Very important study in ES-SCLC. What is role of consolidation thoracic radiotherapy in ES-SCLC?
😳No benefit in PFS or OS with consolidation XRT vs atezo alone. Trial stopped early due to toxicity.
👉🏽Given IMForte and potential DLL3 TCE maintenance options, careful pt selection needed for this approach.

This gold cylinder is a dilution refrigerator used for quantum research.
Inside, experiments take place just fractions of a degree above absolute zero. It allows researchers to test ways to move information through light, a key step toward future quantum networks.
ORNL's operations workforce builds and maintains the infrastructure that powers AI-enabled autonomous science, helping researchers accelerate discovery through robotics, automation and advanced research systems.

🧵 The 10-year FLAME results are important data, and one sentence in Methods deserves more attention than the headline bDFS numbers: “No additional toxicity outcomes were collected after 60 months.” A thread on what that means for a treatment now entered into standard practice
Is this widely adopted now? Can you share some data around this? Also, what has been your referral pattern for this (PCP? Ortho? Or Med Onc for isolated joint pain that's getting worse post ET… etc)? 🙏🙏

@OncBrothers@BijoyTelivala@dr_yakupergun@RenoHemonc@NiuSanford@lauren_henke We have a large network practice and lately even Ortho has become a fan! 😎
It is a great treatment for many patients that live in pain with limited options.
At least one group is studying use with endocrine therapy, think it’s funded by an ASTRO grant? Maybe?
Just to provide some context
There is a great, lengthy chapter on this in the rad onc Brady and Perez textbook, 5th edition… that came out twenty years ago
Tens of thousands of people are treated each year across the globe (not in US obv), and have been for decades and decades (and decades)
About half of all US academic depts claimed to offer the tx per an ACR survey ~40 years ago
The history of all of it is weirdly fascinating
A clearly problematic study has now lost its status as valid scientific evidence. After the Nature Medicine retraction, the related ASCO abstract was also retracted from JCO.
Retractions are no longer rare, but seeing a meeting abstract formally retracted is still not a common occurrence. Hopefully, this case will serve as a lesson.
Does the addition of mucosal ☢️ impact outcomes in patients with #hncsm carcinoma of unknown primary (CUP) site?
This retrospective analysis compared outcomes in pts w/ SCC CUP treated with (n=46) and without (n=88) 50 Gy ☢️ to putative mucosal sites. From mFU 72 mo:
➡️ 5yr OS with and without mucosal ☢️was similar: 56.1% and 57.5%, respectively (p=0.899)
➡️ Tumor recurrences with and without mucosal ☢️ were similar: 32.6% and 27.3%, respectively (p=0.591)
➡️ All mucosal recurrences (9.7%) occurred in current 🚬 at >3 yrs post initial diagnosis, suggestive of 2nd primary tumor

Important survivorship data for anal SCC. Definitive chemoRT achieves cure in most, but w substantial functional cost. In PRO study, 62% of pts w/o stoma had major LARS.
De-escalation RCTs (DECREASE fully accrued, PLATO-ACT4 w early results) critical for improving QOL @OncoAlert
