A hedge fund like Alden Global Capital knows exactly what it’s doing to @BANGEBGuild@mercnewsguild newspaper employees living here.
We know they know because we’ve been telling them in our contract negotiations. #AldenExposed#SaveLocalNews
BREAKING: TEGNA says it terminated its merger agreement with hedge fund Standard General.
It appears we just killed a multi-billion dollar attempt by a hedge fund to take over local news!
@SoCalNewsGroup We sent SCNG a letter this month outlining our pay proposals. The ask was simple: Let us know what you think. Is this a starting point? Can we work together to come to a deal, so we can go back to doing what we love?
Here’s what we got in return: “Thanks for your note.”
After a year of bargaining with @SoCalNewsGroup, the journalists who make this place run are getting impatient.
A year of waiting for pay raises that were already long overdue.
Our question for SCNG: Does the company think we deserve better pay?
Their answer so far:🦗🦗🦗
We announced today that all 14 workers in the @berkeleyside & @Oaklandside newsrooms and their parent company @citysidelocal are unionizing. We met dozens of times over 1.5 years to talk about how we can ensure a strong future for local journalism. This is why we're organizing:
1/We’re devastated to announce that @reveal is experiencing layoffs. It will primarily affect reporters, editors and audience engagement staff. We’re losing 8 talented employees, 6 of whom are people of color. The number of Black union members will drop from 3 to 0.
Standard General is a hedge fund.
Hedge funds extract money from companies and initiate layoffs and buyouts.
Hedge funds should not own the news.
Standard General should not be allowed to take over local news broadcaster TEGNA.
Today is the two-year anniversary of @SCNGguild announcing our intention to organize. We submitted our pay proposal to @SoCalNewsGroup last year. 🦗 No reply. We demand our #CONTRACTNOW ✊🏼
1/ We, the staff of @reveal, are forming a union!
Unionizing will help us create the best version of Reveal, protect our work and mission, and preserve this organization’s legacy. This is our mission statement. #RevealCIRGuild
We’re going into contract negotiations today hoping to improve working conditions for all of our guild members — the reporters, photographers, copy editors and online producers at The Press Democrat. Follow along for updates on our progress for a fair contract! #UnionStrong
"We feel like we’ve been backed into a corner,” Thayer said. “We feel like we’re in a fight not only for our livelihoods, but also for the newspaper itself, the soul of the newspaper.” https://t.co/GLPaqWd0Vc
More photos from yesterday’s picket on Maui from our very own Matt Thayer. Mahalo, again, to everyone committed to fighting for the future of local news. Read more about our fight at https://t.co/WIfyTlwm4a.
.@PacMediaGuild & members were outraged and disappointed by Hearst’s Nov. 10 announcement of the layoff of 10 Guild members, talented copy editors, wire editors and page designers, as part of a move to outsource production to Houston. This list also includes a top Guild officer.
New on @axios: Alden Global Capital has abandoned its bid for Lee Enterprises, at least for now, in part due to rising interest rates and a tougher market to finance deals, sources tell me
— Alden quietly sold part of its stake in Lee in April

Grateful to my @SCNGguild colleagues who shared how our years of flat, inequitable wages and declining benefits have impacted them. We love journalism. We want to keep informing our communities. We need a fair contract. Go @MediaGuildWest 👊🏻 #Solidarity
Under California’s Worker Adjustment Retraining Notice Act (WARN), employers are legally obligated to notify affected employees AND state and local representatives 60 days before a mass layoff.

We go back to the bargaining table in two days! We asked our Bargaining Committee members why they're invested in seeing this process through. Rory Morris says they're "at the table for the people we hire next."
