Bangladesh on the Brink: SAHR Raises Alarm Over Lawlessness, Violence, and Fears of a Failed Transition

Bangladesh stands at a perilous crossroads. The post-coup landscape is marred by lawlessness, mob violence, and targeted attacks on minorities and women, raising growing fears over whether the country can secure a peaceful transfer of power through free and fair elections.

This warning comes from South Asians for Human Rights (SAHR), a leading regional watchdog, which presented its observations at a press conference in Dhaka on Wednesday. The organization painted a grim picture of a nation unraveling under the weight of insecurity, arbitrary justice, and institutional collapse.

Collapse of Public Security

“Since last July’s uprising, law and order in Bangladesh has visibly deteriorated,” declared SAHR Executive Director Diksha Illangasinghe. “The state’s inability to contain mobs, reprisal attacks, and escalating lawlessness has left ordinary citizens unprotected.”

Illangasinghe stressed that the interim government’s foremost duty is to guarantee the safety of all citizens. This, she argued, requires urgent reforms in the constitution, judiciary, and law enforcement agencies.

Targeted Violence Against Vulnerable Groups

SAHR expressed grave concern over deliberate attacks on minorities and women. Hindus, Ahmadis, Sufis, Indigenous peoples of the plains and Chittagong Hill Tracts, gender minorities, and women are being subjected to orchestrated violence—often carried out by mobs, extremist groups, and even factions within the security forces.

“These attacks are not isolated incidents,” SAHR warned. “They represent an alarming pattern that undermines the very fabric of Bangladesh’s pluralism.”

Nine Areas of Deep Concern

The watchdog highlighted nine pressing issues, including:

👉 Continued use of draconian laws from past authoritarian regimes.
👉 Systematic assaults on freedom of expression.
👉The paralysis of the National Human Rights Commission and the Information Commission.
👉 Deepening polarization within civil society.

Mass murder cases, denial of bail, trial delays, and judicial loopholes have further eroded public faith in justice. For many, Bangladesh today feels like a state where insecurity is the new normal.

A Fragile Future

SAHR concluded with a stark message: without swift reforms and a credible path to elections, Bangladesh risks sliding deeper into instability.

“The window for a peaceful transition is closing fast,” Illangasinghe warned. “Unless urgent action is taken, fear, division, and violence will decide Bangladesh’s future—not the people.”

State of #press freedom in "new" #Bangladesh: Body of #journalist Bibhu Ranjan Sarker, missing since yesterday morning, found floating in the Meghna River.

While the Interim Govt and the Chief Adviser's Press Wing remain busy "warning" #media against covering speeches of former PM #SheikhHasina, bodies of missing journalists are being recovered from river banks.

The dead body of the veteran journalist was recovered from the Meghna River in Munshiganj's Gajaria Upazila this afternoon.

According to the family members, Bibhu left his residence at Dhaka's Siddheshwari area at around 10am yesterday for his office, but did not come back. He worked as a senior assistant editor at the Bangla daily Ajker Patrika. He also regularly wrote columns for different media outlets.

⁨In His Final Writing, Bibhuranjan Sarkar’s Plea: Under Pressure, His Question Was ‘What Do I Do Now?’

The late journalist revealed the dire reality of workplace crises and the suffocating pressure on the media, sparked by a colleague’s article.

Renowned journalist Bibhuranjan Sarkar, in his final piece of writing, laid bare his helplessness at work, the mounting pressure on the media, and the professional crisis he faced. After his death, the publication of this writing has sparked wide discussion among journalists and the wider informed community.

In his last article, published recently, he recounted how he came under intense pressure within his newspaper over an article written by his colleague, journalist Mazharul Islam Babla. Explaining the source of this pressure, he cited portions of Babla’s piece. Sarkar asked: “What objectionable thing did Babla write? He wrote that the army sent Sheikh Hasina to Delhi on a military helicopter. And that not only police gunfire but also meticulously designed attacks by militants killed people. Where is the false information here?”

Sarkar strongly argued that this reporting was not “false” and described the external pressure exerted on the newspaper because of it as “unjustified.”

He also described how precarious his own position at work had become due to this incident. “All things considered, my situation at the paper is now very fragile. The well-meaning acting editor, unable to withstand the pressure, has even stopped talking to me,” he wrote.

His final reflections revealed just how deeply this professional crisis had left him despondent and isolated at the end of his life. With a voice heavy with despair and disorientation, he wrote: “What do I do now? Which path do I take?”

After his death, the circulation of this last article on social media sparked shockwaves across the media community and beyond. Many see it as documentary evidence of the invisible pressures weighing down Bangladesh’s press, and have voiced deep concern about the future of independent journalism. His last question seems not his alone, but a larger cry posed to an entire media landscape struggling to uphold truthful and fearless reporting.⁩

Independent judicial inquiry required into frequent deaths of #AwamiLeague-associated people in Bangladeshi jails under the #Yunus Govt: 29 political activists dead in 12 months.

On 17 Aug 2025, Md. Sharif Ahmed, an activist of #Savar Municipal Swechchhasebak League (@albd1971’s volunteer wing) and a former Students’ League leader died in Keranganj Prison. Several alarming aspects of this death include:

First, there are allegations from members of the deceased’s family that Sharif was tortured which ultimately led to the death of the youth; second, like thousands of AL activists and supporters these days, Sharif was arrested without any specific allegations and criminal cases against him. News:

The incident also sheds light on how #impunity for one type of #humanrights violation can lead to other violations; in this case, arbitrary arrests leading to #torture and extra judicial killings.

Sharif’s death takes the total number of AL-associated people dying in jails across Bangladesh since Aug 2024 to at least 29. A number of factors, identified by the family members of the deceased, are common in these deaths: first, the allegations of torture in a significant number of the cases; and second, denial of proper medical treatment.

The Interim Govt should have formed an independent, judicial inquiry into these questionable and highly suspicious deaths in prisons a long time back. However, since they seem to be least bothered by the frequent deaths in #custody, it is up to the international community, esp. rights orgs, to demand answers from the Yunus Govt through the formation of an independent judicial inquiry to look into these custodial deaths.

In “new” #Bangladesh under Nobel Laureate #Yunus, the mob wins again, unsurprisingly:

#Police official who resisted #mob violence removed after protests from the Interim Govt-backed #SAD and #NCP.

Abu Zayed Md Nazmun Noor, Office in Charge (OC) of #Patiya Police Station, #Chattogram has been withdrawn from his post and attached to the CTG Range DIG’s Office following protests blocking roads and highways by the Interim Govt-backed Students Against Discrimination (SAD) Movement and the Nat’l Citizen Party (NCP).

OC Noor’s crimes? Refusal to arrest someone without specific charges and not allowing an unruly SAD/NCP mob from beating up that person inside the police station!

To summarise: At around 9:00 pm on Tuesday, a group SAD/NCP activists illegally detained a former leader of the #AwamiLeague’s student wing (#BCL) in front of the central Shaheed Minar in Patiya, #Chattogram. They manhandled him, and later took him to Patiya Police Station.

However, as there were no cases filed against the abducted BCL leader, police were unwilling to arrest him. This did not bode well with the SAD/NCP mob. During the argument, a group of youths reportedly tried to assault the BCL member inside the police station, which the police naturally resisted.

This led to a heated exchange between police and the SAD/NCP mob, which eventually escalated into a clash. As the situation worsened, police reportedly took the BCL leader into custody and placed him in the lock-up. At least 10 people were injured in the clash, including four police personnel.

SAD/NCP then took the streets for the police’s “discriminatory treatment” in not allowing the mob to have its way. SAD/NCP activists also took to social media threatening to publicly lynch OC Noor like the July-Aug 2024 police killings if their demand for his removal was not met. See:

While this incident is shocking and speaks volumes about the state of law and order in Bangladesh under the Yunus Govt, it did not come as a surprise. Under a mob-friendly govt like that of Yunus’s, this was expected. The Yunus Govt does not see these unruly groups of violent people as “pressure groups” not “mobs”.
