Belle Isle Concern supports the proposed relocation of the Grand Prix to downtown Detroit starting in 2023. The race never belonged on Belle Isle, Detroit’s most important public space.
It looks like there are plans coming together to move the Detroit Grand Prix back downtown from Belle Isle! Here are screenshots of a presentation by Bud Denker of the Grand Prix before council, shared via the social media of Council President Brenda Jones.
Sign spotted at Governor Whitmer's news conference at Belle Isle Park. It's no place for a car race! As the state “reopens” the pace picks up and need increases for people to have green space and access to parks to protect and enhance their health and well-being. #Detroit#Parks
Not happy with the Grand Prix or other issues on Detroit's Belle Isle? Attend the virtual Belle Isle Park Advisory Committee virtual meeting - Thurs., June 17 @ 9:00 am. Not attending makes the DNR think you like what they're doing. Please encourage others to attend. #belleisle
@TCLFdotORG@wallpapermag Beautiful! Piet Oudolf's new garden on Detroit's Belle Isle Park is surrounded by a racetrack for the Detroit Grand Prix which assaults land and monuments and restricts access to this public space for 60 days each year.
The #DetroitGP "is a privatized use,” Charles Birnbaum, Cultural Landscape Foundation said of the race. “A decision is being made to sacrifice irreplaceable parkland that has been held in trust. . . this is no different than the Detroit Institute of Arts selling off artwork.”
The Detroit Grand Prix, which is organized by billionaire Roger Penske, resembles other privatized uses of parkland that activists say undermine the ecology and historic mission of parks. https://t.co/GOTtNLQWzk
Belle Isle isn't an appropriate place for the Grand Prix race. Over 1/2 the island is developed. Promote ecotourism instead, the Oudolf Garden, the forest - the natural features. Promote that beauty and access and keep this precious place a precious place. #DetroitGP#Detroit
Billionaire Roger Penske’s company paid ZERO federal taxes in 2020. Yet for two months each spring he gets priority access to Belle Isle, Detroit’s most beautiful and popular public park to stage a private car race. This is blatant corporate welfare. #MoveTheGrandPrix#GPDetroit
Detroit Grand Prix entitlement in action. They "keep Detroit's Belle Isle Scott Fountain (owned by the citizens of Detroit) running" and apparently think they can do whatever they want with it. #DetroitGP#INDYCAR#Illegal#abuse
It's all about the money, but at what cost is the Grand Prix 60-day takeover of Belle Isle to Detroiters who rely on it for their health and well-being? For many it’s their only affordable vacation spot. They don't have multi-million dollar homes on Nantucket! #DetroitGP#IndyCar
Great article addressing the tension around Detroit's almost 1000 acre island park: Privatization, heavy policing, lack of options for car-free transportation to the island, and the Grand Prix. By @AllnuttBrian
