Today in Washington… a private meeting with the Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Congressman Brian Mast.
The prominent and well-known Congressman invited us to Washington for this meeting.
The discussion was serious and candid, yet friendly at the same time. This was our fifth or sixth meeting, which made the conversation deeper, as each of us has come to better understand how the other thinks.
After asking about the situation in Syria during our repeated visits, he expressed his disappointment that some promises had not been fulfilled, even remarking with a smile:
“A believer is not stung from the same hole twice.” 😊
He also asked frankly:
What has the United States achieved from lifting sanctions? And how has it benefited from Syria so far?
He said he does not have a clear answer.
I responded that there have been real achievements that cannot be ignored, most notably:
Syria is no longer a gateway for Iranian weapons to Lebanon, nor a backyard for Iran as it once was—this is a significant strategic shift.
I also reminded him that in 2018, when President Trump attempted to withdraw from Syria, he faced strong opposition due to the absence of a viable alternative capable of maintaining security and combating terrorism.
Today, however, the situation is different: there is a local partner in counterterrorism, and there is ongoing integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces into the Syrian government, which fundamentally changes the equation.
He acknowledged that these are indeed positive points.
I then emphasized that we need to give the Syrian government a real opportunity.
So far, despite discussions about lifting sanctions, bank transfers to Syria remain nearly impossible, which hinders investment and keeps the economic situation extremely difficult. Therefore, the government cannot be held accountable without being given the tools to succeed.
At the conclusion of the meeting, we stressed to Congressman Mast that our support for Syria is first and foremost support for the Syrian people and for U.S.–Syrian relations—not unconditional support for any government.
I also referenced remarks by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, noting that the options were clear:
either allow Syria to fragment and collapse, or support it to become a stable state. We chose—as he and President Trump did—the right option, while continuing to offer honest advice when needed.
An important meeting that reflects seriousness of purpose, realism in discussion, and mutual respect among all parties, despite some differences in viewpoints.
I was accompanied in this meeting by:
Ms. Alia Natafgi, CEO of the Syrian American Alliance for Peace and Prosperity, and Mr. Abdulhamid Al-Akel, Vice President of the organization.

I met Minister of Communications Abdul Salam Haykal @amhaykal and the Syrian delegation during their visit to Silicon Valley.
What stayed with me most wasn’t the speeches, though they were inspiring, but a small human moment. He took time to speak kindly with my shy daughter and made her feel comfortable and seen. ❤️
Words can’t fully express how respectful and kind he was.
I also spoke with members of the delegation, and they were all genuinely warm, thoughtful, and kind.
Throughout the evening, he greeted everyone warmly, encouraged conversations, and reminded us that rebuilding a country needs its people everywhere.
For me, it wasn’t political. It was simply a hopeful, human moment.
For years, under Assad, ordinary people could barely approach officials or feel heard. This felt different, more human, more open, more connected to the people.
For the first time in a long time, it feels like we have a government that truly cares about Syria and its people.
Thank you for taking the time to make people feel heard and valued.
Sometimes change doesn’t start with politics. It starts with people. ♥️🇸🇾

During his interview with @TuckerCarlson, @USAmbIsrael justified land theft with scripture and said it would be “fine if they took it all” — referring to Israel expanding across the region.
That is not diplomacy.
That is religious extremism with a necktie and a title.
No holy book gives anyone the right to erase nations. Theology cannot authorizes occupation. Your faith ends where other people’s lives begin.
Imposing scripture on those who don’t believe it is terrorism. Period.
