The Yale Center for Brain and Mind Health is hiring! Seeking applicants at any faculty level and in any discipline who are applying #AI to brain and mind health. https://t.co/7KvQmT4By3.
@frmlss@NTFabiano Does wind move the trees, or do trees influence the wind? Is there no way to know what causes what? If only we had a theoretical and mathematical way of handling this.
In my experience, doctors (and journal reviewers) are terrified of the word “cause”; “associations” only.
@KangTarandeep @drruthannharpur@EikoFried I wonder if one potential explanation for this is that individuals seeking treatment for mental health services in the US want to distance themselves from a medical model. Being a “client” may help to do this?
@TrackingActions@fleabrained Slight aside: What can a postdoc position offer an applicant who has already published in a high quality journal, has a good chance at a fellowship, a shot at being an independent investigator, AND can write a grant? This screams “free labor.”
@tcarpenter216@SolomonKurz I once honestly rated a student in the top 10%. A Director grilled me on why they were not in the top 1-2%, as their program only takes students at the tippy top. I explained my rationale, and this student was admitted. I decided thereafter not to take those forms seriously.
@shansiddiqi I once had a program director grill me on an applicant who I rated “only” in the top 10%. He said all their admitted students were in the top 1-2% and needed my justification. I decided not to play this game anymore with an invalid rating scale. I rate them all exceptional now.
@alephlove@lluaces@williamspsych I understand the rationalization, but I don’t understand the dearth of data to support it. ACT could, in principle, have a huge corpus of studies showing predictable superiority to CBT, but we don’t have that because high quality research just isn’t being done.
@AllenFrancesMD I think the issue w/ the onsent having to be in childhood is how much evidence of onsent is required. Is a parent report of attention and concentration difficulty enough? Do we need an actual historical assessment from that age range? I tend to set the bar high here.
“We successfully reconstructed a recognizable song from direct neural recordings and quantified the impact of different factors on decoding accuracy.” Sure ya did. @Neuro_Skeptic

@aaronjfisher Pubs seem to be a measure for student interest and motivation for a PI’s work. So of course many of them care.
The central problem to me is that we require students who have never done any graduate level work to identify and commit to an area of research interest so early.
@liz_mattera@KlonskyLab@Salahud33nMirza For compulsions and pos reinforcement, I think yes. Think about an functional behavioral assessment and what we might need to know. Maybe @KlonskyLab has some ideas on NSSI or papers on assessing behavioral functions for NSSI?
@liz_mattera@KlonskyLab@Salahud33nMirza Dump the terms and focus on the functional assessment. What’s being reinforced by what? Distress is neg reinforced by both compulsive behavior & NSSI. I don’t agree compulsions are likely to be pos reinforced; they tend to be done to remove distress not increase pleasure.
Sometimes it’s legit hard when you have a paper rejected half a dozen times—but with a polarizing mix of stellar reviews and condescending ones—whether it’s time to throw in the towel or whether you’ve got something really great #AcademicChatter#AcademicTwitter@liz_mattera#ocd
