@njiska @METACRISlS Why is recognition what matters? It's a weird idea to me, the PRC is a great example, it would be silly to insist that the ROC actually governed China after 1949. I don't see why I should defer to international institutions when I can see who's actually governing Yemen myself.
@njiska @METACRISlS They control the capital and a large majority of the population, and have done so continuously for years now. They are the only government of Yemen that is actually based in Yemen, with the internationally recognized government actually being exiled in Saudi.
@oggidibaa @soaphieX This argument doesn't make much sense to me, how many cases are there where individual artists are actually able to use IP law to protect their work from those conglomerates?
@AliceAvizandum Not watching so can't be sure, but if the phrasing was ash shaytan al akbar I think that's a translation error. It was historically the US is ash shaytan al akbar (the greater satan) and the USSR was al asghar (the lesser satan. Obviously the latter doesn't come up much anymore.
@CougarSpider So why have fixed and limited sentences? A 5 or 10 year sentence isn't particularly useful for the goal of incapacitation, sentences should be indefinite, ending only when the prisoner is deemed to no longer be a threat. Clearly prisons are not actually used for this purpose.
@agraybee What do prisons actually accomplish? If the goal is deterrence, then a swift corporal punishment would work better, if it's rehabilitation then lol no it's not, if it's just isolation then what's the point of a non-life sentence, either you need to be isolated or you don't.
@AliceAvizandum It's the most annoying, petty kind of sadism too. I can understand someone who wants to beat lucy letby to death, I can't understand someone who wants to see her react to a judge handing down a life sentence. It's so bloodless, and what's the point of bloodless sadism?
@ws20g4@yakyucosmo One factor is that actually being able to successfully hit and pitch on that high of a level requires an enormous amount of work. Shohei Ohtani is pretty much a baseball monk, and a lot of people aren't willing to do that.
@AgentZapdos@SwampCommunist That particular part is actually not true, her hospices did give people pain killers, but Indian law at that time heavily limited what kinds and how much they could administer.
be a mercy to deprive them of it.
This vicious response to the idea that someone might have got a book without paying for it is an abomination, and it reveals the abominable nature of copyright-culture.
This whole affair is just more proof that copyright must be immediately and totally abolished. People must not be allowed to believe that they can own art, for their own sake if nothing else. Copyright turns authors and artists into the worst kind of petit bourgeoisie. It would
