💙On today's #WorldChildrensDay, we celebrate the 35th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. However, there is still a lot of work ahead.
For 35 years, Belgium has been committed to the protection and promotion of children’s rights:

🇧🇪🇺🇳 Today Belgium reiterated its calls for:
🔹A #humanitarianceasefire
🔹 Respect for #internationalhumanitarianlaw
🔹 Full humanitarian access
🔹Immediate release of all hostages and arbitrarily detained persons.
The growing stain on humanity has to stop and has to stop now.
It’s very rare for Human Rights Watch to praise a government for getting something right.
Listen to @astroehlein explain how #Belgium is leading the way on the #Gaza crisis: https://t.co/bRhGL6hqth
Belgium steps up its commitment to humanitarian aid for the civilian population of #Gaza by pledging an additional 2 million euros at an aid conference in Paris. The funds will support @UNRWA and medical centers, ensuring vital supplies reach those in need.
At the conference on humanitarian aid for Gaza, I reiterated the urgent need for a humanitarian ceasefire. The international community must take its responsibilities. Belgium is increasing its humanitarian aid & is contributing to an international investigation by @IntlCrimCourt.
On behalf of all the children caught in this nightmare, we’re calling for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire.
We need unrestricted humanitarian access, immediate and safe release of all abducted children, and protection for all children.
I am horrified by the reported attack in Gaza on an ambulance convoy outside Al Shifa hospital.
Now, for nearly one month, civilians in Gaza, including children & women, have been besieged, denied aid, killed & bombed out of their homes.
This must stop.
Wars have rules.
“International humanitarian law establishes clear rules that cannot be ignored.
It is not an a la carte menu and cannot be applied selectively.
All parties must abide by it.”
- @antonioguterres
The protection of civilians is paramount.
The Laws of War establish clear rules to protect human life and respect humanitarian concerns.
Those laws cannot be contorted for the sake of expedience.
Belgium 🇧🇪 voted in favour of the resolution.
We support any initiative aimed at:
▪️protecting civilians and freeing hostages
▪️encouraging respect for international law by all parties
▪️establishing a humanitarian ceasefire &
▪️avoiding an escalation of violence in the region.
I repeat my call for a humanitarian ceasefire in the Middle East, the unconditional release of all hostages, and the delivery of life-saving supplies at the scale needed.
Everyone must assume their responsibilities.
This is a moment of truth.
History will judge us all.

“We must stop this dramatic impasse.
We absolutely need to move the trucks as quickly as possible, and as many as possible.”
– @antonioguterres says allowing aid through the Rafah crossing into Gaza could mean the difference between life & death. https://t.co/LEjd2aZTm9
It’s impossible to be at the Rafah crossing & not feel heartbroken.
Behind these walls there are 2 million people in Gaza with no water, food, medicine, fuel.
On this side, these trucks have what they need.
We need to make them move—as soon as possible, as many as necessary.
Shocked by reports of the destruction of a hospital and school in #Gaza. Hundreds of civilian casualties, including women and children, are feared. Belgium calls for respect for international law. Civilians must not be targeted, nor used as hostages or shields.
Humanitarian needs in Gaza are increasing exponentially.
Belgium will therefore contribute an additional €2 million to @OCHAopt.
I also reiterate my call to ensure humanitarian access to Gaza and protect civilians.
