On September 11, 2001, the US military arsenal contained more than 200 strategic bombers, 2,100 fighter jets, 10,500 nuclear warheads, and 550 ICBMs. We could have flattened all of Afghanistan and Pakistan with 1% of our firepower. A rounding error.

Any other great civilization in human history, given the same wealth of military resources, would not have hesitated to do so. Caesar would have completed it before sundown; Sulla would have laughed you out of the Roman Forum (or worse) for even broaching the idea of restraint.

But not the United States. Despite the horrific barbarism we had suffered on our shores, we—more than any great power heretofore in mankind’s history—made every effort to avoid harming civilians and minimize collateral damage. Even when it was to the detriment to our own martial efficacy; even when it meant prioritizing the lives of Afghan locals over American troops.

Then, we did something even more unprecedented: We spent 20 years rebuilding the country that had housed the monsters who murdered our own people. Two decades of grueling deployments for hundreds of thousands of our troops, at an unfathomable cost of blood and treasure. More than 2,000 precious lives lost; $2 trillion of taxpayer funds sent to the most backward country on the planet, an investment never to pay us any return.

America is the greatest country on earth, and the US military is the most morally righteous fighting force ever to march the globe. Keep the aftermath of 9/11 in mind any time someone tells you otherwise.
