I had no idea about Academiciens until now. They act as official guardians of French culture and intellectual life, also called Immortals because they're elected for life by the Académie. They each get their own custom sword to go with their vestments, and they look amazing.
i’ve always been fascinated by the phenomenon of language taking visual form in response to its natural environment.
many ancient scripts from tropical regions like baybayin, khmer, thai, balinese, and javanese developed their rounded, flowing forms not purely for aesthetic beauty, but because they were traditionally written on palm leaves. paper was not a very ideal medium in humid climates so dried palm leaves became the writing surface of choice.
sharp, straight strokes could easily split or tear the leaf. so scribes adapted their technique by favouring curved and looping forms that were gentler on the leaf surface. over generations, these practical adjustments became the standard way of writing the characters. what began as a physical limitation slowly transformed into a defining stylistic identity across much of southeast asia.
i find it incredibly compelling that something like climate and plant life can influence the way a language looks. not just what people wrote, but literally how their writing physically moved across a surface.
i just think that's so freaking cool.
Here's the exact armour being depicted in that Black Figure pottery - not mythical - real. The crests were organic and thus long gone.
This was anachronistic to the time period, but not mythical.
Stop the copes, stop the fanboying. It's pathetic.
