I compared the books of our top 20% of customers (in revenue size) against the bottom 80%.

Here is what I found. 5 expense lines that are clearly different.

Salaries and wages: 73% of the top 20% carry it, vs 35% of everyone else.
Insurance: 82% vs 53%.
Rent: 73% vs 43%.
Utilities: 89% vs 68%.
Development expenses: 24% vs 10%.

At a glance it looks like bigger businesses simply spend more. But it's more specific than that.

They hire people (salaries). They protect what they built (insurance). They commit to a place to work from (rent).

Interestingly, development expenses is the smallest bar on the chart, and proportionally the widest gap on it: the top 20% are nearly 2.5x more likely to have it on the books at all.

Notice what none of these are. They are not the expenses you cut to survive. They are the ones you take on to grow.
